Leona Lewis is out from under Simon Cowell’s thumb and has a new record deal with Universal Music’s Island Records U.K. and Def Jam. Lewis’ first album with the new label, I Am, is due out September 11 digitally on Amazon. Leona released her first single from the album, “Fire Under My Feet,” in the U.K. back in May but it didn’t make the top 40. However, it did list in the Top 40 on U.S. Billboard Twitter Tracks and Hot Dance Club Songs. Lewis’ next single, “I Am,” was released to BBC Radio for streaming on June 30. Two remixes of the song were released on July 19 to Leona’s Vevo account. It seemed that with “I Am,” Leona was thumbing her nose to former boss Simon Cowell.

“I am with or without you
I am breathing without you
I am somebody without you
I am, I am
I am free without you
I am stronger without you
Thought I would never rise again
But I am, I am”

Three more songs were released from the album, with “Thunder” being the first single released in the U.S. on July 27, and it rose to slot 29 on both Adult Contemporary and Top 40 Billboard charts. Leona released a dance tune, “Another Love Song,” on August 14 and Leona’s latest single, “Power,” was just released on September 3 on iTunes.

Leona talks about “Power” on her Facebook page.

After winning the X Factor in 2006, Leona’s single “Bleeding Love” catapulted her into worldwide fame. Unfortunately Lewis never quite matched the success of “Bleeding Love” after that. This powerhouse vocal performance was so powerful that nothing else released by Lewis was as phenomenal. Lewis went on to release two more studio albums by 2012 and a Christmas album in 2013. Leona’s dwindling record sales came to an all-time low with Christmas, With Love, and with it the end of her career with Simon Cowell and Syco Records. By the time Cowell dumped Lewis, Leona had already secured her new contract with the Island Records label. Lewis spoke out about parting ways with Cowell on Billboard. Simon apparently had no hard feelings toward Leona.

Will I Am give Leona Lewis the fame she once knew as Cowell’s Golden Girl? Lewis’ fans can only hope so; her powerhouse vocals were meant to be heard. If you are a fan of Leona Lewis, be sure to order her album and help put her back on the map — she deserves it!

Leona tweets about her upcoming album and thanks her fans.
