FeS2 or Iron Sulfide in Imported Chinese Drywall Sparks U.S. Health Alert

FeS2 or Iron Sulfide has been found in Chinese drywall imported into the U.S. and has caused a major health alert in the U.S.

The drywall containing the toxic FeS2 or iron sulfide was imported from China during the housing boom. Estimates are that roughly 5 million square feet have been used in homes and businesses in the United States and may be installed in more than 100,000 homes.

FeS2 Health Concerns

The Environmental Protection Agency has been working dilligently to identify homes contaminated with the FeS2 contaminated Chinese drywall, which contains other toxic compounds such as: butanethial, hydrogen sulfide, carbonyl sulfide, mercaptan, methylthio pyridone, sulfurous acid, sulfur dioxide, sulfuric acid and stronium sulfide.

The FeS2 or Iron Sulfide is a compound of Iron Pyrite, more commonly known as ‘fools gold’ because of it’s yellowish green metallic appearance. When it reacts with other chemicals it emits several harmful gasses that you breathe in while living in your home. Prolonged exposure to the gasses can cause severe health problems.

FeS2: What can you do?

If you suspect your house has FeS2 contaminated Chinese drywall installed, contact the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) immediately.
