The Weeknd Scores Song Of The Summer With ‘Can’t Feel My Face’
The Weeknd has landed in the top position on Spotify’s Song Of The Summer list. “Can’t Feel My Face” was released on June 8 and steadily climbed to the top spot. The Weeknd’s song debuted at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100. It has since been an earworm that demanded attention from listeners.
The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, is a Canadian-born singer, songwriter, and record producer. In late 2010, Tesfaye anonymously uploaded several songs to YouTube under the name The Weeknd. He released three nine-track mixtapes, throughout 2011. The Weeknd’s work was critically acclaimed. Tesfaye says the name came from his decision to drop out of high school at the age of 17 one weekend and never return home. The misspelling of his name was done to avoid conflict with a Canadian band that was already named The Weekend.
The Weeknd’s style has been praised by BET, The Source, and Rolling Stone. There have been comparisons to Prince, Phil Collins, Guns N’ Roses and R. Kelly. MTV’s John Norris has gone as far as calling The Weeknd “the best musical talent since Michael Jackson.”
Taking the top spot wasn’t enough for the Toronto-bred singer. The Weeknd’s song “The Hills” nestled in at number two on the Song Of The Summer chart. Quite an amazing accomplishment for an album released at that time of year. Based on how hot The Weeknd is now, a ticket for The Madness Fall Tour 2015 will be a hot commodity. The tour starts in November and is filled with tons of North American stops, as part of The Weeknd’s scheduled dates.
While speaking to Rolling Stone, The Weeknd mentioned the transition fans can expect to hear between “Beauty Behind the Madness” and his debut.
“[Kiss Land] was the state of mind I was in—introverted, like David Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch. You didn’t know if you were hearing a chorus or a verse. It was just my thoughts. At one point, I didn’t care. Now I want as many as people to hear my music as possible,”
Sharon Dastur, senior vice president of programming at radio giant iHeartMedia, calls The Weeknd one of the biggest artists out there. Not many artists get to number one as quickly as he did.
Having a Song Of The Summer credit notch on his belt, a former early 2015 hit with “Earned It,” and coming off a successful VMA appearance, The Weeknd looks primed to dominate the end of the year and beyond.
