Andrew Garfield, In His Own Words: ‘I Was Never Spider-Man’

Andrew Garfield, and his Amazing Spider-Man for many fans, were not up to par for the Marvel character. The Sam Raimi led Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 were commercial successes, with the the third not doing as well. Though, in the end, it was Raimi who chose to leave the franchise, and led Sony to usher in the Amazing Spider-Man films. For Spider-Man fans that felt that Andrew Garfield didn’t fit the bill, Comicbook reports that he has a few words for them.

“Well, nothing, because I was never Spider-Man. Because Spider-Man’s a fictional character. He’s not real. [laughs] You know what’s funny, to give you the vulnerable answer, I thought I was going to be Spider-Man, you know? I went into it going…ego s*** came in. It’s like, “Okay, here it is. I’m f****** Spider-Man. I f****** made it.” All that s***. [laughs] I didn’t actually make it. I was never Spider-Man.”

Beyond the self-deprecating speech, Andrew Garfield lamented to Zaki Hasan, that he was disappointed in his performance as Spider-Man. A character that Garfield felt he did not end up measure up to in playing, despite his long-held admiration.

“I was the actor that I am. The person that I am. Struggling with trying to match up with something that I’d elevated so high in my mind. Elevated beyond what I could attain, what I could achieve. The great thing is, that’s what Peter Parker was doing as well. Peter Parker created this symbol that he couldn’t live up to. It was never enough. He never felt enough, and I never felt enough.”

Tom Holland will be playing Spider-Man in the 2017 reboot, and making an appearance in Captain America: Civil War, as the Inquisitr has reported, but will Holland “rescue” the Spider-Man franchise? Well, Andrew Garfield feels that he attempted to do just.

“And I wanted to…not to say that I needed to rescue those films, but I couldn’t make them as deep and soulful and…life-giving as I could ever dream. And I’m never gonna be able to do that, with any film. It was especially difficult in that situation because…well, just because. And it was especially important because that character has always meant so much to me…”

As Spider-Man’s third film adaptation nears, and Tom Holland gets to prove if he is better than Maguire and Garfield, Spider-Man fans have to wonder “Will Spider-Man finally rescued?” Well, that is hard to say, as no franchise has been without its reboots, i.e. Batman and Superman. Spider-Man fans will just have to wait and see, if they’re not too exhausted already.
