Pliny The Younger: The Unofficial World’s Greatest Beer

The reviews on Beer Advocate aren’t done by high-profile taste-ticians. They aren’t done by beer experts or industry analyzers. They’re done by regular people who just love beer. And those regular people continually agree that the world’s greatest beer is Pliny the Younger from the Russian River Brewing Company.

Pliny The Younger has a near perfect score on Beer Advocate which makes it the unofficial world’s greatest beer. But don’t expect to find a six-pack at your local liquor store. Pliny The Younger has an extremely limited release. So not only is the beer delicious. It’s also rare.

The Russian River Brewing Company releases Pliny the Younger every February for two weeks. Getting a glass of the elusive brew can be difficult, so several people settle for a more available pint from Russian River, Pliny the Elder. (Which consistently ranks in the top 10.)

Russian River writes:

“Pliny the Elder is our Double IPA, so we felt it was fitting to name our Triple IPA after his son. It is almost a true Triple IPA with triple the amount of hops as a regular I.P.A… That said, it is extremely difficult, time and space consuming, and very expensive to make. And that is why we don’t make it more often! This beer is very full-bodied with tons of hop character in the nose and throughout. It is also deceptively well-balanced and smooth.”

Here’s a video of the guys from Russian River talking about the famous beer.

Have you ever tried Pliny The Younger? You’ll have to wait until next February for another chance to try the famous beer, but don’t worry, there are plenty of other delicious craft beers to keep you occupied until then.
