Ed Sheeran And Taylor Swift Enter Guinness World Records

Besides the fact that Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran are two of the most popular artists today, they’ve now also made it into the Guinness World Records 2016 book. According to the Guinness World Records website, both Swift and Sheeran made music history.

Ed Sheeran currently holds the record for the longest climb to number one on the United Kingdom singles chart. The climb ran for 19 weeks, showing a steady incline from number 26 with its release on July 5, 2014 to number one on November 8, 2014.

Taylor Swift made it in the book this year with her record for the most million-selling weeks in United States album chart history. Her albums have gone for three million-selling weeks on the Billboard 200 albums chart. This record is the most prominent in sales since 1991 when Nielsen SoundScan first began keeping track of record sales.

This record came to be thanks to her three latest albums, Speak Now, Red, and 1989. Speak Now, released in 2010, sold 1.047 million copies, Red sold 1.208 million copies in 2012, and 1989, her latest album, which debuted in 2014, sold 1.287 million copies.

Swift’s talent for breaking records is nothing new. She set the record for the most United States Hot 100 hits by a female in 2010 with 11 of her songs on the list. She also broke the record for fastest selling digital single with her hit “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” It achieved this status in less than 50 minutes after the song was released.

However, Ed Sheeran hasn’t had the same kind of success. This will be the first record he’s broken since his music career really took off with his 2014 single “Thinking Out Loud.”

It is fitting, however, that Swift and Sheeran show up in the Guinness World Record 2016 book together since they’ve worked together in the past. Taylor heard Ed’s music while touring in March 2012. Impressed with his talent as a lyricist and vocalist, Swift contracted him to help her write and sing the song “Everything Has Changed.” The music video for the song has received nearly 150 million views. The song featuring Sheeran’s vocals in the background was a part of her fourth album, Red.

Swift and Sheeran aren’t the only stars to make it into the book this year, either. One Direction, Dr. Dre, and PewDiePie are in there, as well. Game of Thrones, the hit HBO TV series also found a home in the new record book for the largest TV drama simulcast, thanks to one episode in the fifth season that was broadcast in 173 countries at the same time.
