There’s something so familiar, but so strange, about the photo above. This rare photo of the Beatles during the “Abbey Road” cover shoot will be heading to auction later this month where it is expected to bring in some serious cash.

The photo, which shows the Beatles walking in the opposite direction of the iconic “Abbey Road” cover, is one of just 7 images taken during the “10-minute” photo-shoot. The photo was taken by Iain Macmillan outside Abbey Road Studios in Northwest London.

Sarah Wheeler of Bloomsbury Auctions said:

“The photo has been called an icon of the 1960s. I think the reason it became so popular is its simplicity. It’s a very simple, stylised shot and is a shot people can relate to. It’s a place where people can still walk.”

On The Red Carpet reports that the alternative Abbey Road photo is expected to fetch close to $15000 when it hits the auction block on May 22nd through Bloomsbury Auctions.

The Telegraph reports that the Beatles knew what they wanted the cover of their 11th studio album to look like. Paul McCartney even drew a quick sketch to show Macmillan what the band was looking for. The band had officers hold up traffic for about 10 minutes while they walked back and forth across the road. MacMillian took 7 photos during the 10 minute shoot.

In addition to the band walking in the wrong direction, the photograph also shows Paul McCartney wearing sandals. In the original photo, McCartney is bare foot. This has led to several bizarre conspiracy theories, including one that says McCartney died and was replaced with a body double.
