Britney Spears To Appear At 2015 MTV Video Music Awards

It’s been revealed that the infamous pop star Britney Spears is slated to appear at MTV’s Video Music Awards this Sunday.

According to E! News, Spears will be presenting the first Moon Man of the evening. Those up for awards include Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Beyoncé, Fetty Wap, Nicki Minaj, and many more.

Performances will be given by Justin Beiber, The Weeknd, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and Demi Lovato among others.

In honor of the former Mickey Mouse Clubee, let’s take a walk down memory lane and remember Spear’s past history with the VMAs.

Way back in 2000 when Britney was only 18, the pop princess gave her first performance at the MTV award show, making a statement that she was no longer the little girl we remembered from Disney. Set to appear as the opening act, Spears shocked the audience when she ripped off her sparkly black pantsuit to reveal a scandalously nude-colored costume and performed her hit single “Oops!…I Did It Again”. Britney showed off her dance moves with impressive choreography and even managed to cover up a wardrobe malfunction with ease, as pointed out by Fusion.

Just a year later in 2001, Britney was back at it but this time she wowed with something a little more scaly. Spears performed her hit “I’m A Slave For You” with a giant yellow python sitting on her shoulders. Britney’s theatrics that year were much more grandiose: the stage was turned into a swamp, fog machine included. Thunder rumbled throughout as Spears performed and there was even a tiger on stage. Spears upped her game with the choreography that year and didn’t even skip a beat as she pulled her slithering friend onto her shoulders.

Britney’s 2003 performance marked the iconic kiss between her and pop queen, Madonna. Though a seemingly innocent beginning, with two cute flower girls throwing petals on the stage, nothing could prepare the world for what was to come. Spears began Madonna’s classic “Like A Virgin” atop a gigantic wedding cake. Britney was later joined by Christina Aguilera and the queen herself as she rose out of the top of the cake in a black tux. The three performed “Hollywood” before Spears and Madonna shared that scandalizing kiss.

Britney’s next performance at the VMAs wasn’t until four years later in 2007 after she had her well-publicized breakdown. Compared to her past, this one was a definite crash and burn. It seemed that Britney had lost her touch. The choreography was not as on point as her previous appearances and it was honestly quite sad, especially for those who were rooting for Spears. Britney’s fans had hoped for one of her usual performances but were sadly disappointed.

Spears did manage to come back though. In 2011, she was presented with the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award. An impressive tribute involving a massive mashup of Britney’s songs honored the pop princess at the award show.

Well, there you have it. Britney has been rocking the VMAs for a decade and a half and obviously we still can’t get enough of her. Though Spears is more family-oriented these days, her fan base continues to grow.

Britney may not be set to perform this year, but we can still expect the VMAs to be just as entertaining as ever.

You can catch Britney Spears’ surprise appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards on August 30 at 9 p.m. ET.
