‘Shovel Knight’ Is Becoming An Amiibo — And Maybe A ‘Smash Bros.’ Fighter

One of the most popular new video game characters is Shovel Knight, a shovel-wielding warrior from a retro-style platformer on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. The character has gained such a strong following among Nintendo fans that it may come as no surprise to learn that an amiibo of Shovel Knight is on the way.

According to Destructoid, a rumor from earlier in the week about a possible Shovel Knight amiibo has been officially confirmed by the store GAME Brighton. The company accidentally sent out a premature tweet announcing the release of the figurine. Shortly after, GAME deleted the tweet, but not before screenshots were sent around the internet, spreading the news that Shovel Knight would indeed become an amiibo figure.

The tweet confirmed that the amiibo figurine will unlock exclusive content on both the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U platforms. Eager fans can expect to pick up the character starting November 27 in the U.K. There has been no announcement so far about a North American release for the Shovel Knight character, but it’s unlikely Nintendo would release it much later.

And that’s not all the Shovel Knight news that’s shown up this week. There are also rumors floating around about the possibility of Shovel Knight becoming the newest Super Smash Bros. DLC fighter. Nintendo has been taking suggestions for new fighters to add to the game roster, and the indie star has been a surprisingly popular choice next to King K. Rool from the Donkey Kong franchise.

According to Nintendo Life, the chances of Shovel Knight showing up in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS are looking better than ever. The developer of the Shovel Knight game, Yacht Club Games, teased a new and exciting announcement related to Nintendo platforms.

“We’ve heard the cries of bringing more exclusive content to Nintendo platforms. It might not be quite what you expect… but keep an eye out for another MEGATON announcement soon!”

Yacht Club Games is also reportedly released a DLC expansion pack to Shovel Knight, which it plans to show off at the upcoming PAX event. And the developer will apparently have a kiosk featuring Wii Us with Super Smash Bros. installed on them, according to a mysterious Nintendo Life source. Could this mean Yacht Club games is ready to announce Shovel Knight as a playable Super Smash Bros. character?
