Man Arrested For Burning Face Off Of Pit Bull With Acid

A San Antonio man, accused of pouring acid on a pit bull and burning her face off, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon by the San Antonio Police Department and Animal Care Services.

According to San Antonio Express News, Ignacio Sanchez Alvarez, 45, was taken into custody after he was identified by ACS Cruelty Investigators and the SAPD’s East Side Property Crimes Detectives.

Alvarez faces a felony charge of cruelty to a non-livestock animal, and according to Audra Houghton, an ACS Field Operations Specialist, he may also face a misdemeanor for animal cruelty of failing to render adequate care.

“This is the suspect in [the] case we’ve been investigating for approximately the last week and a half of Rosie the dog who was burned with acid.”

He was living in the home when the burned pit bull was discovered.

A City of San Antonio ACS Facebook post said the 5-year-old pit bull, Rosie, suffered deep chemical burns over 100 percent of her face and head. A caustic liquid, possibly hydrochloric acid, is suspected to have be poured on the pit bull.

The pit bull lost her entire right ear, and her left ear was partially dissolved. Rosie the pit bull also may suffer permanent blindness, and there were signs that she was left without medical care for several weeks.

According to the San Antonio Current, Rosie the pit bull is expected to receive surgery on her eye this week, thanks to monetary donations made by the community.

Last Wednesday, The City of San Antonio ACS posted on Facebook, asking the community to donate to help offset the costs of the restorative eye surgery for the pit bull as well as to assist in treating other animals who have been “cruelly treated like Rosie.”

The next day, they stated that they were “deeply humbled by the outpouring of support for Rosie,” and that donations made “covered the estimated cost of Rosie’s restorative eye surgery which should take place early next week and additional treatments.”

“Rosie, her amazing foster parent, and ACS Staff are extremely and eternally grateful for the outpouring of loving support. Rosie is in great hands and we will be sure to update the world on Rosie’s journey to healing and a happy home. Her name is her new outlook on life and we deeply thank each of for your words of compassion and concern.

As the case progresses through the judicial system, we’ll provide updates, as available. Rosie is in protective foster care, continues to heal, and should be receiving her restorative eye surgery this week – thanks to the gracious support received by the community.”

Online donations to help support Rosie the pit bull and other abused animals can be made on the San Antonio ACS website.
