Katherine Heigl Makes Return To TV In New Series With ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Writers

Katherine Heigl is once again making her return to television. After abruptly leaving Grey’s Anatomy, Heigl returned back on to the small screen after a few misses in theaters. Her first hopeful comeback story was in NBC’s State of Affairs, which saw her as an executive producer along with her mother Nancy Heigl.

That said, the NBC drama was cancelled after one season. While many thought Heigl would simply fade into obscurity, the actress, who got her start on teen show Roswell and rose to fame on Grey’s Anatomy, is at it again. According to TVLine, Heigl is set to replace actress KaDee Strickland in a CBS drama titled Doubt that was believed to be a dead in the water project. How’s that for an interesting parallel?

The most fascinating part of Heigl’s involvement in the drama Doubt is that it’s being run by Grey’s Anatomy writers Joan Rater and Tony Phelan. This is an interesting happenstance given Heigl’s shaky history with Grey’s Anatomy show runner Shonda Rhimes. Heigl also famously took her name out of the Emmy race in 2008 and released this doozy of a statement, “I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention. In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials.”

The statement was seen as a direct slam towards the writers on the show, and it seems like show runner Shonda Rhimes took the outspoken statement as a huge offense given her comments on the actress and her new “no ass—–” policy she adopted on set after Heigl left.

Though, it looks like Heigl made up with at least two of the writers from Grey’s Anatomy, as they’re willing to revive a pilot that CBS initially didn’t pick up. According to TV Line, the series will revolve around character Sadie Ellis (Heigl), who is described as, “a female lawyer who becomes romantically involved with one of her clients (who may or may not be guilty of a brutal crime).”

The show originally starred Teddy Sears opposite Strickland, but he’s out of the role. The only returning cast members include Dreama Walker, Laverne Cox, Dule Hill, Elliott Gould, and Kobi Libii.
