Jerry Remy Cancer Surgery Forces Red Sox Announcer to Extend Leave of Absence


Setbacks after Jerry Remy’s Cancer surgery has forced the 56 year old Red Sox announcer to take an extended leave of absence.

Jerry Remy’s Cancer surgery setbacks and leave of absence was announced Wednesday on the New England Sports Network web site. For years, Remy has done color commentary for the network’s Red Sox games.

Jerry Remy Cancer Caused by Smoking

Jerry Remy was a smoker. He had surgery for lung cancer late in 2008 and developed an infection and pneumonia shortly after. Remy, a former major league second baseman for California and Boston said he is going public about his lung cancer and complications in hopes of reinforcing to fans the dangers of smoking .

“I want to focus on completing my recovery so that I can return to work without distractions or interruptions, I hope that disclosing my bout with cancer will reinforce the dangers of smoking to every member of Red Sox Nation, especially children.”
