Bryce Harper learned the hard way how much it hurts to hit yourself in the head with your own bat.

The Nationals’ rookie took out his frustrations in the dugout after he grounded out in the 7th inning. Unfortunately, the 19-year-old phenom got way more than he bargained for.

After he swung his bat at the dugout wall, the wall served its revenge by bouncing the bat right back into Harper’s head, directly above his left eye.

After the incident, Bryce could be seen exiting the trainer’s room later in the evening, with a golf-ball sized welt over his eye, and ten stitches.

Along with the injury, Harper received a nickname from his teammates that he is not likely to live down soon: “Bam Bam.”

According to The Washington Post, Harper stated of the incident that:

“I just got caught up in the moment. I want to do so well. It just got me.”

Bryce Harper’s manager Davey Johnson understood, but also expressed qualms about his player’s unfortunate injury. According to AOL Sporting News, Johnson stated:

“It’s an easy way to get rid of your frustration. I’ll speak to him about it, because evidently he went a little overboard. That’s not what you want to do. The equipment is supposed to take the brunt of it. We’ll address that.”

Johnson also stated that:

“I didn’t think much about it. We put a band-aid on it, one of those butterflies. That’s what ballplayers do — break bats, throw helmets. That’s not anything new.”

Thankfully, Harper survived the ordeal with no concussion, although he will have a rather large shiner to remind him of his anger. Bryce Harper was on the schedule to play in Saturday’s game.
