Judy Trunnell: First American Death Connected to Swine Flu

A woman named Judy Trunnell has become the U.S. resident to die while infected with the swine flu (H1N1). Trunnell, a 33-year-old teacher from Mercedes, Pennsylvania, died this week.

Judy Trunnell: Swine Flu Connection

While Judy Trunnell suffered from the swine flu, health officials are not going as far as to say her death was a direct result of it. Trunnell had other “chronic underlying health conditions,” local media outlets report, and it’s not clear what specifically caused her death.

Judy Trunnell was also pregnant when she checked into a Cameron County hospital on April 19. Her baby was delivered via C-section, Mercedes-area TV stations say, and is thus far doing fine. Trunnell also leaves behind a 4-year-old daughter and a husband. Funeral arrangements are now pending.

One of Judy Trunnell’s family members spoke on-camera about her death and the shock it delivered. Trunnell, he says, worked with disabled children in her job. (She was a teacher at Travis Elementary School in Mercedes.)
