‘Scandal’ Spoiler: Mellie Fights Olivia For Fitz
Scandal, at its best, throws road blocks up between Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) and Fitzgerald “Fitz” Grant (Tony Goldwyn) that keep the two star-crossed lovers apart.
But in the Season 4 finale, Scandal viewers finally got to see Olivia and Fitz together. Can viewers expect to see this storyline play out in during this season of Scandal?
At least initially, according to comments Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes made during a recent press event.
“That was a pretty harrowing place where the world had been blown apart for everybody except for Olivia and Fitz, who were left on the Truman balcony… doing some kissin’. But everybody else was in a fairly low-at-heart place… Things weren’t going so well for people, and we pick up right there in that environment.”
While Olivia and Fitz are resting peacefully in each other’s arms, the rest of the Scandal cast had the rug pulled from under their feet during last season’s finale. First Lady Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) was celebrating progress in her U.S. Senate bid when she and Cyrus Beene (Jeff Perry) were evicted from the White House by Fitz. This season, Young confirmed that her Scandal character won her election in an interview with TV Line.
“Poor Mellie, man … It should be the best time in the world — she got her senate seat! — but it’s like the worst, because Fitz kicked her out. And he was so cold when he did it. She’s having to regroup, but she’s sort of by herself completely, because everyone is alienated at this point.”
Despite being kicked to the curb by her husband, Mellie hasn’t conceded defeat in the race for his heart, Young said. While moving on might be easier for the Scandal character, Mellie can’t help but try to be in Fitz’s good graces again, Young said.
“She’s never going to give up without a fight — I mean, shes Mellie! — but a lot of options are no longer open to her… If she didn’t love him, that would be the better plan. She hates herself for loving him, but she loves him! Oh, her life would be so much simpler if she didn’t!”
The on-air hiatus for Scandal hasn’t kept the cast apart. As seen by the official Twitter account for Scandal, the stars have gotten together on a couple of occasions this summer.
