4.0 Quake Hits San Francisco: Earthquake Sparks No Reports Of Injuries

A 4.0 quake hit San Francisco, there are no reports of injuries in the effected bay area. The San Francisco earthquake hit just north of the Piedmont area near Berkeley on Monday morning. The earth-shaking was felt along the East Bay and downtown area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake hit along the Hayward Fault at a depth of about 3.4 miles, the USGS also noted.

The “shallow” 4.0 magnitude quake hit the San Francisco area around 6:49 a.m. with a sharp jolt. The earthquake was then reportedly followed by several “gentle rolls.” No immediate damage or injuries were reported as a result of the Hayward Fault Line incident.

“This was a fairly small one but we should be prepared for them at all times,” USGS representative Leslie Gordon said.

At least one resident who lives near the epicenter of the 4.0 quake told local reporters that he experienced “minor plaster cracks” in his home. Bay Area Transit officials halted commuter trains briefly while workers checked the tracks for damage.

There are “several hundred” faults in California. Approximately 200 of the faults are have been deemed “potentially hazardous,” according to the United States Geological Survey. The Hayward Fault Line runs from the cities in the San Pablo Bay area through Fremont and the Berkley, Oakland, and Hayward areas.

The 4.0 magnitude earthquake occurred only a week before the 1-year anniversary of a 6.0 quake in the Napa, California wine country region. The 2014 earthquake reportedly caused “millions” of dollars in damage and injured hundreds of people. The Napa Valley quake was the largest earth-tremor to strike in the San Francisco Bay area since 1989. The Loma Prieta 6.9 magnitude earthquake of ’89 was on the San Andreas Fault.

California is home to 38.8 million people. A host of scientists have warned that a major earthquake could strike the state at any time.
