Jon Hamm’s Advice to Teen Girls on Romance and Flatulence

If you’re not already an avid reader of Tavi Gevinson’s site Rookie, Jon Hamm’s advice to teen girls is a good way to get drawn into the eminently readable heir apparent of seminal 90’s magazine, Sassy. (Sassy. I can’t even.)

Jon Hamm’s advice is part of the site’s Sassy-esque “Ask a Grown Man” column, during which the site’s young, female readers pose tough questions to a father-aged man who is not actually their dad. (Could you imagine asking your father questions about makeouts or… well, makeouts, mainly, those are important?)

Reading the questions and responses, Jon Hamm’s advice is really quite adorable- with a liberal but protective air about it, like when he writes to the girl who asks about having a stronger interest in moving forward sexually than her boyfriend:

“If it’s making out, then he should want to do that. It’s super fun. If it’s having sex, then there’s other things to deal with, so he’s probably right in saying slow your roll… Use your best judgment, or talk to somebody who has better judgment.”

Another touching moment in Jon Hamm’s advice comes when another girl asks the question all teen girls want to know, which is basically whether teen boys feel the same “stomach-knotting” feelings about us as we did them. Hamm acknowledges:

“The answer, quite simply, is absolutely. Because we’re human beings.”

But it’s not all makeouts and crushes. Another girl asks about flatulence in front of one’s SO, to which Hamm advises:

“I was under the impression girls never farted… Farting is farting- everybody farts. Go read that book ‘Everybody Poops.’ It’s the same thing.”
