Winning Powerball Numbers August 15: $70 Million Jackpot Up For Grabs

One lucky lottery player in California started out the month in a big way by winning $110 million on August 1 (7, 13, 24, 49 and 57 PB 15), but there hasn’t been a winner since. Although the last three drawings haven’t produced a jackpot winner, almost one million ticket holders have cashed in on non-jackpot prizes ranging from $4 to $1 million in August.
Odds are slim (1 in 175.2 million) that one or more ticket holders will win tonight’s $70 million jackpot, but that won’t stop millions of people from paying $2 for a ticket for a chance to become extremely rich.
If you are dreaming about the luxury car you will buy or the vacation you will take if you win the Powerball jackpot on Saturday night, keep in mind that you may not get the entire $70 million jackpot even if you match all six numbers. There’s always a chance that another player will be just as lucky as you are and you will have to split the jackpot.
According to CNN Money, all but one of the top three jackpots in the history of Powerball have been shared by three ticket holders. The biggest jackpot in the history of the game was $590.5 million, won by a Florida woman on May 18, 2013, but the second-highest prize given away on February 11, 2015 was shared by three winners. Three lottery players also shared the third-highest jackpot ($448 million) in August 2013.
If you win it all or have to share the jackpot with another player, the lottery offers two ways to receive your windfall — a one-time lump sum payment or a 30-year annuity. The lump sum is based on the cash value of the jackpot ($45.1 million on August 15) and the annuity is based on the full jackpot spread out over 30 years. Federal and state taxes will be deducted before payment is made to the winner.
Powerball tickets are sold at lottery retailers in 44 states; Washington, D.C.; Puerto Rico; and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. ET on Wednesday and Saturday nights.
