Miley Cyrus revealed how she suffered from “body issues” while playing the spunky Hannah Montana on Disney Channel. She also shared the horrors of working 12-hour shifts, looking like someone who was simply not her.
During her interview, which is going to be featured in Marie Claire‘s September 2015 issue, Miley Cyrus confessed how she faced acute body issues trying to conform to the idea of a beautiful, upbeat and always full-of-life Hannah Montana on Disney Channel. Starting at a tender age of 10, Cyrus starred in the Disney show for four seasons from 2006 to 2011.
She was just a teenager of 14 years, but the work expected from her, made her feel quite insecure about her body as she had to look like someone who just wasn’t her, revealed the singer.
“From the time I was 11, it was, ‘You’re a pop star! That means you have to be blonde, and you have to have long hair, and you have to put on some glittery tight thing. Meanwhile, I’m this fragile little girl playing a 16-year-old in a wig and a ton of makeup. It was like Toddlers & Tiaras. I had f*****g flippers.”
Cyrus confessed that all the heavy makeup, a full wig that completely obscured her real hair; big, fake eyelashes and the unending sessions of digitally smoothening her natural body to iron out the flaws, caused her to suffer from dysmorphia, the loathing one develops about one’s own body,
“I was made to look like someone that I wasn’t, which probably caused some body dysmorphia because I had been made pretty every day for so long, and then when I wasn’t on that show, it was like, ‘Who the f*** am I? When you look at retouched, perfect photos, you feel like shit. They lighten black girls’ skin. They smooth out wrinkles. Even when I get stuck on Instagram wondering, ‘Why don’t I look like that?’ it’s a total bummer. It’s crazy what people have decided we’re all supposed to be.”
Interestingly though, Miley quickly contradicted herself saying she was absolutely comfortable with her body and has no issues whatsoever, flaunting it,
“I don’t really stress too much about being out there. There’s nothing left to catch me doing. You want to hack my e-mail so you can find my nude pictures? I’ll just f***ing put them up.”
Evidently, Cyrus has ditched the Hannah Montana look and opted for a lot more edgy wardrobe in the recent years. Her clothes ensure that the Miley Cyrus, who suffered from body issues while playing Hannah Montana, is not the Miley Cyrus we see today.
