Margaret Cho Divorcing Al Ridenour After 11 Year Marriage: ‘It’s Been Really, Really Hard For Her’ [Video]

Comedian Margaret Cho is divorcing her husband, Al Ridenour, after 11 years of marriage. According to People, Cho had separated from her husband last September and finally filed for divorce on August 12 in Los Angeles, California, citing “irreconcilable differences,” as their “legal grounds for separation.” Margaret Cho is 46-years-old.

A spokesperson for Margaret Cho declined to release a statement about why the comedian and actress is divorcing her husband. Cho, a self-proclaimed bisexual, was in an open marriage with Ridenour. Margaret is taking the separation in stride, although she’s not happy about divorcing her soon-to-be ex. A source close to Margaret told Us Weekly that when the couple separated, Margaret was crushed.

“It’s been really, really hard for her. She’s going through a really rough time and she’s really sad about it,” the insider explained.

According to the Daily Mail, Margaret also explained her unconventional marriage to Queerty.com.

“It’s about creating family. It’s about creating the relationship that you’re meant to create.” Margaret said. “I’m all about commitment. And I’m all about marriage. And I’m all about family. And I’m queer also.”

“A lot of people have questioned my marriage and questioned the validity of my marriage, but I’ve been married 51 times longer than Kim Kardashian and that guy she was with. 51 times longer. 51 times! I mean that’s, like, significant,” Margaret Cho exclaimed during the interview.

In an August 2013 episode of the talk show The Real, Cho confessed she never wanted to be with one person.

“I’m married to a man but I’m bisexual so I like both. We got together because… we both have this [idea], ‘I just don’t want to have sex with the same person my whole life. That’s just gross,'” Cho told the show’s host.

It’s not clear of the open aspect of the marriage is the reason the pair are divorcing.

According to Us Weekly, in a later interview with Oprah during an episode of Oprah: Where Are They Now? in January 2014, Cho explained that she and Ridenour chose an open, non-monogamous marriage as soon as they got together. According to Margaret, it always “worked out” for the couple.

“I think when you have an open relationship you have to have boundaries, but ultimately, you want emotional monogamy with somebody no matter what,” she said.

Margaret Cho indicated at the time she had no intentions of divorcing her husband, and that they have a different idea of what marriage is about, explaining, “I don’t really think about it more than that, it’s just family.”
