‘Baywatch’ Movie Eyes Zac Efron To Star Opposite Dwayne Johnson

Neighbors actor Zac Efron has joined the cast of the upcoming Baywatch movie. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Baywatch has been a project long in the making. But now that the reincarnation has nabbed itself a director in Horrible Bosses Seth Gordon, and an excited Efron, it looks like the beach drama is finally moving full steam ahead.

Adding Efron to the cast is a smart move on movie head’s parts given the 27-year-old’s loyal female fan base and his ability to entertain in comedic roles. Earlier this year, Efron took home two awards. One being the award for Best Shirtless Performance for his role in Neighbors at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards in April. It’s easy to see that Johnson and Efron will make waves.

Writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift penned the most recent script that will see Dwayne Johnson as a serious and committed lifeguard, who is forced to pair up with a young, cocky Efron. Together the two will attempt to save their beach from a rich oil tycoon. Beau Flynn and Ivan Reitman will serve as producers on the Baywatch movie with Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions also set to produce.

News of the Baywatch movie was first announced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson last year, ABC News recalls.

“Edgy, raunchy and hopefully, funny as all hell. Cue slo mo running on the beach… #WhoNeedsMouthToMouth #RedShortsBeHugginABrotha,” Johnson previously wrote.

In the meantime, Efron has been busy filming on the set of multiple movies, all due out in 2016. The actor just finished up work on his latest comedy, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, where he will star alongside Adam Devine, Anna Kendrick, and Aubrey Plaza.

Efron is also attached to star opposite Robert De Niro in Lionsgate’s Dirty Grandpa. The comedy will feature the A-list actors teaming up for a road trip full of trouble.

Later this month, Efron will also travel to Atlanta, where he will begin filming on Neighbors 2 with a returning cast of Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne.

Production on the Baywatch movie is scheduled to begin sometime in February, 2016, with a planned release to theaters in 2017.
