NY Yankees closer Mariano Rivera visited with surgeons on Monday in regards to his torn ACL and things didn’t go as smoothly as anticipated, as his agent Fernando Cuza was quoted by FoxSports.com having said:

“We ran into complications.”

The Yankees and Cuza did not divulge any additional information pertaining to what Dr Chis Ahmad, David Altchek, and Dr. Russell Warren, discovered in regards to Mariano Rivera’s torn ACL.  Yankees general manager Brian Cashman stated:

“I won’t comment that right now. He was at the hospital for Special Surgery and saw Dr. Warren and then saw [Dr.] Ahmad. He was scheduled to see both.”

Rivera’s injury came as a result of shagging practice fly balls at Kauffman Stadium on Thursday, where he collapsed in center field and began holding his knee.  Last week’s Kansas City diagnosis indicated that he had a torn meniscus as well as a torn ACL and that he would require surgery which would bring the 42-year-old’s season to a screeching halt.

Along with Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, and Andy Pettitte, Mariano is part of the Yankees’ Core Four.  Pettitte, who turns 40 next month, is set to be back on the mound in the Bronx come Sunday.  He’s scheduled to start against the Seattle Mariners in his first MLB outing since his 2010 postseason retirement.  Manager Joe Girardi was quoted by Fox Sports having said:

“It will be a great day at the Stadium.”

With only two teams, Minnesota and Colorado, having worse averages this season, it would be interesting to see how the New York Yankees’ rotation plays with both Michael Pineda and Mariano Rivera out with injuries.
