Queen Latifah Comes Out of The Closet

queen_latifah_617_409

Throughout the years there has been hushed whispers about actress and rapper Queen Latifah’s sexuality. First when she played a lesbian in the 1996 film Set it Off.

However, Latifah, real name Dana Owens, has never commented about her sexuality publicly, even though it’s rumored that she had a long lasting relationship with president of Hollywood Trainer fitness, Jeanette Jenkins. The two split ways in 2011.

Now it’s rumored that Queen Latifah is in a new relationship with a choreographer. Perhaps she’s giving Latifah the push she needs to come out to the gay community. Never speaking up on behalf of the LGBT community, Latifah transitioned to coming out in a quiet press release that announced her commitment to headlining this year’s annual Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival, which she has never participated in before.

In a press release, the Co-President Pat Crosby expressed excitement over Queen Latifah’s participation in the festival:

From hip to R&B, pop to standards, Queen Latifah is the voice of our generation, and her concert here will be phenomenal, for her to make her worldwide Pride debut here in Long Beach is a tremendous testament to the popularity of our celebration and to the strength of our community.

This has been a quiet transition, that might have to do with the ups and downs of her love life, with her split from her ex, and her new supposed love. In May of 2011 the actress dabbled with gay perception, while acting on VH1’s Single Ladies, which she also produces. The character talks about an accidental coming out, having a revelation that “gay is the new black.” Her character goes on to say, “Being gay is fabulous…I have six new Facebook fan pages. And for every sponsor that falls out, I’ve gotten two more.”

The festival takes place Saturday, May, 19, and only time will tell before we know if Queen Latifah is ready to open up more publicly at the festival.

This isn't news to the LGBT community. We've known for a long time. Coming out is a personal process–there is no set time to do it. Apparently Ms. Owens is comfortable with doing so at this time. Kudos to her.

  2. Julie JustJulie

And we welcome the Queen with open arms !

  3. Frazier Sullivan

Slowly but surely! Good G-d it's taking her a long time…well this is a big step though it still isn't as conclusive as I would like it—very circumstantial! Come out of prison and come home to your family. The social and emotional process of just saying this is who I am and being total free–like it, love it, lump it, or LEAVE IT! #TEAM GayPride

  4. Janice Palmer

  10. Janice Palmer

LOL @ Hol' up. Kellz's crazy or like she likes to call it "cray". I guess all these blogs need "content" cause she hasn't exactly been hiding it…

  15. Brandi Journiecomesfirst Thomas

Lol everyone already knew queen was gay!

  16. Lynn H. Ballen

woah – that's an irresponsible headline! QL hasn't come out. she's just playing at Long Beach Pride. sure we'd welcome her with open arms if she DID come out. and we all know the rumors, plus our gaydars are pinging. but hey, Jennifer Hudson and Chaka Kahn have played Pride fests, and it didn't mean that either of them came out.

  17. Ovetta Sampson

Um in what world has Queen Latifah said that she's gay? Not that it matters but a woman headling at a festival which both Jennifer Lopez and Katy Perry have done doesn't make you gay. So where is the proof, evidence besides your own fantasy that she's gay? I just don't understand this obsession with everybody and their momma being gay. Not every one who doesn't speak about their sexuality gay. It could mean they have class. Just my opinion.

  18. Bernard Burgess

Damn the Queen is a Queen or…. Is she a king , man we always thought she was suspect.Tell me something Idk like Clay Aiken is straight lol:)

  19. Al DeCosey

Janice Palmer Tru…… lol I mean, when ur photographed in a romantic embrace with ur "trainer" who happens to be of the same sex……. kinda puttin it out there….ijs….lol But I LOVE Queen La!!! Always been a fan since Come into My House, U.N.I.T.Y. and the list goes on……

  20. Al DeCosey

Frazier Sullivan I can dig it, but "coming out" means so many different things for so many different people….. at the end of the day…. she really hasn't said anything or made any personal statements about coming out….. when she does finally make a "statement" of such, it will be in her own time on her own terms as it should be…….

  21. Al DeCosey

Thank U! people are going in on this post and the funny thing is……QL hasn't said a thing! "Entertainers" do PRIDE events all the time, nothing new, this isn't really news……

  22. Rosenda Moore

Of course is not news because we all know she's a Lesbian… She should just say it though, she might feel better afterwards

  23. Rosenda Moore

Of course is not news because we all know she's a Lesbian… She should just say it though, she might feel better afterwards

  24. Donna Christian

She came out in 1996 with her actions in that role on Set it Off. It was very obvious.

  25. Chephinia Edwards

We, the black community, always knew she was. I don't know what is the big deal 'coming out.' I like the fact that she was private about her relationships. Why must celebrities discuss their love relationships with everybody? Goodness!

  26. Casey La Pila

"She came out in 1996 with her actions in that role on Set It Off. It was very obvious."

No, it was very… ACTING. And acting is a part of Queen Latifah's skill set as an entertainer. Do you believe Anthony Hopkins is a cannibal serial killer because of his "actions" in "Silence of the Lambs"? Well?

Acting is acting, and if/when the character's actions are believable, that's a testament to the skills of the actor/actress, and that's it.

She might be lesbian, bisexual, or straight as a rod, and simply choosing to support the LGBT community for reasons entirely her own… or just because it's a kindhearted and noble thing to do in the face of the hatred the community experiences on a daily basis.

Whether or not she's gay is irrelevant, but claiming prior knowledge based on a character portrayed while ACTING is beyond stupid. If she chooses to make her sexual preferences known publicly, she will do that in her own time. Stop buying into sensationalist headlines, and learn to read for content. >.<

  27. Joe VanDusky

I knew about this back in '93. She is, but at the same time, who cares? She's human and there is nothing wrong with her.

  28. Jake Lenders

It's also to do with the fact that her roles in movies just so happen to capture her now current sexual orientation.

  29. Joe VanDusky

What was the last movie that she was in that would now fuel the media to pay attention to this?

  30. Kegan Mahon

I think we're missing the bigger point; she is obviously either a male ;) or an Android superhuman.

  31. Kimberly D. Parker

It's not news to most folks I know but hey, do your thang Queen.

  32. Demarcos Lorenzo

So now the world can exhale…………rolls eyes…she always radiated Butch lesbian since she first came onto the scene in 1989…..

  33. Marcus Smokie Moore

At the end of the day same person. So big deal

  34. Jim Bishop

Hell everyone who was observant knew she was gay when she first started in show business, so why did she take so long to say she was…………….

  35. Tamaris Caldwell

That's what's up I love her even more now I have much respect for her cuz I know it wasn't easy to do wit her career and all I will forever support her

  36. DeAnna Everhart

Makes absolutely no difference to me if she is straight, lesbian or bisexual…she is a loving and genuine soul who has suffered great tragedy in the loss of her brother, and has overcome so much! I love her work and admire her tenacity in her personal life and her professional life. She has been at the top of the list of my favorite entertainers for a long time! And her sexuality is her own business. She will not lose me as an ardent fan!

  37. Sylvia Sunderland

i saw the movie set it off & it was really good…glad she finally got this off her chest & no longer feels the need to hide…

  38. Laurel Scott Sheppard

I LOVE her, she is a great actress and so beautiful!!

  39. Jess McClure

woman is north of 200 lbs – like Rosie she cant score a man so go the other way to help your movie jobs – people sell out for anything and that's why gay people don't empress me one bit – its to easy to be gay now so the wonder and mystery is gone – she must need the attention from Hollywood , I wont spend a dime to see her now -

  40. Shondrika Merritt

All the comments keep saying finally she has come out, finally she is comfortable in her own skin. 1. Nothing in this article is quoted saying that she indentifies as being a lesbain 2. If she is, what makes you think that she isn't out? Just because she is a celebrity doesn't mean she has to "come out" to us(the public), when did you go on national t.v. and tell the world your sexuality? Never cause you don't have to and neither does she. She owes us nothing. When I see her in pictures and in interviews and in movies she seems happy. She has been a positive rolde model and an inspirational business woman. Nothing but respect from me for all those things.

  41. Shondrika Merritt

Rosenda Moore I am just wondering what leads you to believe that she is not feeling good right now? Why does she have to say anything. If the most important people in her life know what does "just saying it" have to do with her being happy?

  42. Leisha Williams Sparks

So now "coming out" is the "in" thing, I could give a Rats A** about anyone, famous or not coming out, personal lives mean just that – personal! There is only Judge and Jury an it sure is not me, however, I am so sick and tired of every gay, lesbian, transgender fell the need to throw this in EVERY persons face. Everyone deals with discrimination at some point in their life, its how you deal with it that defines you, not what your private lifestyle is. And yes, I am one of those who believe your lifestyle is a choice, no one was born gay, or a girl trapped in a mans body.

  43. Anthony Hightower

… My, question, is like that of a couple others, " Why, is this news?" Ms, Owens, isn't a person who owes anyone, an explination for why they do what they do or don't do, any particular thing. I believe, she has the right to love & be loved by whomever(?)… She's not my favorite, Actress, Rapper, Comedian, Singer, Wieght Watcher,Talk Show Host, or Lesbian; What she's done with her life, thusfar, is how I think she should be recognized, rather then for her personal preferrences~ Enjoy your life, Ms. Owens

  44. Anonymous

it never really mattered if she's gay or not…she's just a talented beautiful person….

  45. Cheryl MakingMoves Foster

Stop relating being gay and gay rights to being black. Not the same issue. One is skin color and the other is boy or boy action.

  46. Katherine Marie Nowak

Who gives a crap? I mean really, it's her life! It's none of anyones business!

  47. Jazzy Blue

I disagree ….gay is not the new black…its a shame that it's a trend….just because I'm black I'm gay…hell no…homosexuality is in all races and has always existed …I don't judge but its not my belief …but ppl is trying to turn it into a trend …one crowd I'm not following …but I still love e everybody

  48. Kless Ganier-Davis

Folks talking bout wat they know…wow! Unless yall know fa sure, ya really dont KNOW anything…PERIOD! If she is or isnt is her business!

  49. Danita Saulsberry

When I first saw her in person, I thought, "Yep", lol.

after obama's evolutionary change of mind……………..the queen comes out again………………..eh!

  51. Laverne Moody

Will she please STOP posing for COVER GIRL and LOREAL FOR WOMEN, AND TAKE HER GAY SISTER WITH HER.
    Ellen DEGENOROUS?

  52. Marlene Fortner Starling

NO SURPRISE TO ME! NOT HARD TO SEE THAT SHE IS GAY, THAT IS IF U CAN SEE.

  53. Anonymous

I never knew she was gay/lesbian until today. I still loved her work and will probably still keep loving her work. Knowing she is gay/lesbian changed nothing of my opinion of her, her work, her talents and quite honestly, that fact is irrelevant to me.

  54. Rebecca Ashworth Mazeau

who cares if she's gay. to much about peoples sexuality now days who care who your with in your bedroom at night might as well tell's all of your fav. sexual postions to while your at it. I can careless about anyones sexual prefrence I care more about what type of person you are. again who cares!

  55. Vicki Wagner

This headline is misleading. Queen didn't come out- she PERFORMED at a gay pride festival. I've performed for many straight festivals and that doesn't mean that I am straight. I am gay and I don't care if someone is gay or not. If she is that is great. If not- great. She's a FANTASTIC entertainer.

  56. Marilyn P Daggett

To me, it doesn't matter. What I REALLY want to know is this: why is everybody so damned interested in her sexual orientation, anyway? Does it mean she gets paid for her work less if she is Lesbian? We need to get our noses out of other people's business and mind our own.

  57. Anonymous

Gay or Straight the Queen is still classy. She holds her own. Thick too–Gawd!

  58. Stacey Preddy Robinson

She is human, her sexual preference does not change who she is as a person……still the Queen!!!!

  59. Kim Jong

HHAHAA THIS IS FUNNY.I WONDER HOW ALL THOSE GUYS WHO TALKED ABOUT LATIFAH AS BEING A " REAL WOMAN" FEEL NOW HAVING BEEN FANTASIZING ABOUT A DUDE IN A WOMANS BODY.

  60. Redd Alertt

    @Gerrick…..BWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAAAAAAAAA!!! U GOT DAT RIGHT!!

  61. Anonymous

so what if she has decided to come out. she came out in set it off damn people are you all that blind and there were words after that movie that she was gay…..look at her past ever seen her with a man at any functions.

  62. Lisa Rivers-Hobbs

Yep kinda knew she was in the closet. She played thst role in Set it Off a little too well and you never hear or see a man on her shoulder or side for anything.

  63. Sherry Jamison

Good for her! I love queen latifah no matterwhat her sexuality is !! Go girl !!

  64. Monica Bennett

This is news to me, I never even thought about her personal life. As tolerant and accepting Hollywood is, I wonder what kind of roles she will get now. Remember after all the box office success George Lucas had, he had a devil of time getting Red Tails released, and he's white. I think its time for more minorities in Hollywood to create their own studios and production companies and just do it themselves (gay, black, hispanic etc.) I think there enough minority wealth out there to do it themselves.

  65. Shambra N Clayton Worthey

Frankly, I don't care one way one way or the other. I don't care to know anyone's sexual preference…it's a personal thing. The question is, why is it of relevance who you do and how? The whole topic is disgusting! That is what is so wrong with the entire matter….The only thing that sets gay and lesbians apart from other people, I said the ONLY thing, is their "sexual preference". When will people wake up and realize that! Then you have the unmitigated gall to accuse people of hating on you. It's not you people detest, it's what you reduce yourselves to, a sexual object. What would this world be like if everyone, I mean ALL people, went around announcing to the world what their sexual orientation was and let that just hang in the ai? r…Who would want anything to do with them? Why does your sexual preference constitute a special set of rules for how I interact with you? You really should make up your/my mind…Do you want me to know you're gay/lesbian and call you that or not? Why do you want people to be penalized for calling you what you openly say that you are. What you really want is attention. So we are damned if we ignore you now and damned if we address you. Get over yourselves. The ONLY thing and I mean ONLY thing, that is different about you and I, is I keep my sexuality in my bedroom and you want an audience. You also want the very church that has taught and practiced it's own doctrine since forever, to sanction and condone your choice. Forget that your choice is and has been contrary to their belief and teachings. But, should now put it's doctrine aside, so you can have your way (attention seeking). That would be laughable, if it weren't so sad. You don't come to the church and ask for prayer, or seeking God's forgiveness…NO…You want the church to change along with the rest of the lost to condone your "choice." Well, news bulletin…love you with the love of the Lord and enough to say, it ain't right, you can stomp scream and pound your fist..throw all the tantrums you want, won't change a thing. The gov't can acquiesce and most of the people, won't change a thing, it is still wrong. There are those of us who knows this and can love you and never give in to your way of life as long as it is against what God says. GOD DOES NOT ASK US NOR REQUIRE US TO DO ANYTHING THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR US TO DO. IF HE SAID IT, YOU CAN DO IT. GIVING UP MOST ADDICTIONS IS DIFFICULT, BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE….GROW UP!

Just who was she hiding it from? The public has known for years. It's a ploy for pubilicity. Every gay entertainer seems to be using it to get attention…

  74. Tracie Shorter

I do not understand the fascination with others sexual preference? She's a talented & gifted person, that's all that should matter.

  75. Tracie Shorter

Lol, yes- that role was written for her specifically

  76. Gay Storm

It makes no difference to me – she's a very talented actress and singer. Why is everybody so preoccupied with everyone's sexual preference?

  77. Matt Goodwin

I agree, who cares. She is still a good entertainer

It's interesting how we've become a society in which people have to announce their personal lives to the world. What's next? And what the heck difference does it make?

  79. Tia M. Gray

These comments are so ignorant. Set it Off was not a coming out party it's called great acting. Does that mean Sean Penn is gay because he definitely played that part so well in Milk. He even won an Oscar for playing gay so well.

  81. John Kevin Gomab Dorsey

I agree with Shondrika. Is it really importatntr to know, because ynless we are in the bedroom with folks , the we dont know who is being naked with who or even if its just kissing or whatever. I am only aware for sure who I kiss or have sexual acts with. I honestly don't know which men and women are having sex with people of the same gender. I have no plans to walk in on any tribadism or frottage so I will never know. As an ex-porn addict I have seen more than my fair share of sex acts via books in the 80's and 90's and internet. So in essence are we saying that id QL tells the world she likes to kiss women only and go down on them and engage in pleasurable sex acts with women, that she will feel better ?? That is

  82. Cree Free

I'm coming out i want the world to know got ti let it show…wow I still love my queen sista…she's my soul sista, soul sista love you Queen Latifah

  83. Evonne Scott

Set It Off's scene between Latifah and girlfriend in the garage, was set to the most romantic songs. Does anyone know the name of the song? Is it on the soundtrack, or was it just an interlude wanting viewers wishing for more? Nevertheless, definitely a sweet ass song!
