The Bilic era at West Ham got off to an inauspicious start on Thursday when the team crashed out of the UEFA Europa League in a qualifying playoff match against what should have been an easily beatable Romanian Astra Giurgiu side — mainly because Bilic selected a team with 10 inexperienced players from lower in the West Ham system, with Arsenal loaner Carl Jenkinson rounding out the squad.

The loss was a heavy price to pay for resting nearly the entire team that will take to the pitch against Arsenal on Sunday, so Bilic may feel some urgency to make his gamble pay off.

But Arsenal, who placed third last season to West Ham United’s 12th, is just as determined — and far more talented.

“I’m ready for a fight and of course motivated to start well,” said Arsenal’s manager of the the past 19 seasons, Arsene Wenger.

“One of our targets is to start strong. We had a good preparation and that should give us the needed confidence,” Wenger said. “The Premier League is a fight in every single game so we have to prepare ourselves mentally for that and come strong out of the blocks straight away against West Ham.”
