Spice Girls World Tour: Emma Bunton Throws Cold Water On Rumors, But 2016 Reunion Could Still Happen

The Spice Girls world tour isn’t happening — at least not yet.

The most famous girl band from the 1990s had been teasing fans with the idea of a new world tour, and reports indicated that the group (sans Victoria Beckham) was finalizing plans for an international tour in 2016.

But now former Spice Girl Emma Bunton is putting a kibosh on the world tour rumors, saying that “nothing’s happening at the moment.”

Bunton hinted that there were negotiations, however.

“If anything happens and it’s concrete, and we decide on something, I will let you know,” Bunton said on Heart FM on Friday morning.

There is evidence that Bunton’s statements could be a smoke screen to get attention off the not-fully-planned tour. Journalist Dan Wootton, the first to report on the Spice Girls’ plans for a 2016 world tour, indicated that the group isn’t ready to make anything official yet.

If the Spice Girls did reunite for a world tour next year, it would be a big milestone. The group hit the big time 20 years ago on the strength of their 1996 hit “Wannabe.” The group’s members have already hinted at the reunion, including a Twitter exchange between Mel C and Bunton.

Mel B has also hinted at something special for the anniversary. In an interview last month on the Today Show, she talked about the girls getting together for a tour.

“I’ve got so many great memories,” she said. “I got to tour the world with four of my best friends. Even today, we all still support each other.”

“You know, when you say it’s our 20th anniversary coming up, it does make you think, ‘Oh, my Gosh! It really has been that long,’ ” she added. “Hopefully, you know, we’ll gather the troops around and we’ll get to do something to celebrate it next year.”

If the Spice Girls do reunite for a world tour, it will be the first time they performed together in three years. The group has come together a few times since splitting up in 2001, including a 47-stop tour in 2007 and a performance at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics.
