2012 Kentucky Derby Winner: I’ll Have Another [Video]

For those who missed the televised 2012 Kentucky Derby, I’ll Have Another, ridden by Mario Gutierrez, won the 138th Kentucky Derby from the 19th position after overtaking Bodemeister, who maintained the lead for the majority of the race, on the outside of the final stretch in the this year’s spectacular race.

The thoroughbred Derby champion, I’ll Have Another, is owned by Paul Reddam and trained by Doug O’Neill, USA Today reported.

While it was the first Derby victory for Gutierrez, I’ll Have Another previously claimed the Santa Anita Derby by a nose.

This year’s competition was tough with winners from the Florida Derby, Blue Grass Stakes, Arkansas Derby, Wood Memorial, and Santa Anita Derby all competing in this year’s 168th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

Union Rags was the favorite to win at 9-2. Bodemeister went off at 5-1.

The Kentucky Derby 2012 crowd broke last year’s record of 164,858 with 165,307 people in attendance May 5, 2012, at the Kentucky Derby Festival.

Dullahan, ridden by jockey K. Desormeaux, had mornings line odds of 8-1 and came in third, just behind Bodemeister. Dullahan was followed by Went The Day Well and Creative Cause in 4th and 5th respectively.

The favorite to win, Union Rags, came in seventh place, right behind Liaison.

Now that the most exciting two minutes in sports is over until next year and Mexico’s Gutierrez has been draped with a blanket of roses, how likely do you think it is that I’ll Have Another will win the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes to take home the US Triple Crown?
