‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Will Reinvent Itself For McDreamy-Free Show

Grey’s Anatomy is set to reinvent itself as it goes on without its dreamy lead, Patrick Dempsey. Fans have already vowed to stop watching after Dempsey’s beloved Derek Shepherd was killed in a car accident just episodes before the season finale.

That said, it looks like ABC isn’t exactly worried about McDreamy enthusiasts striking the show off their DVR lists. According to ABC’s Paul Lee, he has already seen the mapped out plan for a Derek-free Grey’s Anatomy, and apparently, it looks good.

According to E!, Lee, who took to the stage for the TCAs, “We’ve seen the pitch for Grey’s Anatomy for next season. The show reinvents itself again.”

With one doc out of Grey’s, another doc must come in — enter Off The Map‘s Martin Henderson as the new hunk. We’re not sure if he’s going to be the one for Meredith, but actress Ellen Pompeo said that she’s “excited” for her post-Derek “journey.”

Lee also elaborated on whose choice it was to kill off Derek. While actor Patrick Dempsey said he was surprised by the move, and rumors circulated that Shonda Rhimes killed Derek off due to behind the scenes drama, Lee alluded that it was Dempsey’s other interests outside of Grey’s that got him the boot.

That said, it doesn’t seem like ABC has any ill-will against Patrick Dempsey. Lee said it was, “a difficult decision” to make. “It was great to see Grey’s Anatomy so relevant and taking the national conversation.”

Some even think that Meredith’s character has grown without Derek prior to the character dying. Pompeo certainly seems to be excited to see how Mer will stand on her own. In a Twitter post back in April, Ellen Pompeo wrote to her impassioned fans as follows.

“I have always said what keeps me going is the fans. Knowing we move you and inspire you. There are so many people out there who have suffered tremendous loss and tragedy. Husbands and wives of soldiers, victims of senseless violence and parents who have lost children. People who get up each day and do what feels like is the impossible. So it is for these people and in the spirit of resilience I am honored And excited to tell the story of how Meredith goes on in the face of what feels like the impossible. I hope you will all join me on her journey. With gratitude and respect, Ellen.”

Although some fans may not be tuning into the show’s 12th season, ABC is confident about Grey’s Anatomy‘s legacy, and what it has to offer fans that will still tune in to see Meredith’s journey.

“We have no reason to suspect Grey’s Anatomy won’t go on for many, many seasons to come.” That said, if the ratings are affected by fans refusing to watch, then ABC may have no choice but to cancel the show.

Then again, Grey’s still has a sizable audience, so it doesn’t seem like it’s going in that direction, even though it’s entering its 12th season.
