Ridley Scott Plans To Start Shooting ‘Prometheus 2’ In January

Fans of the Alien franchise have much to be excited about in the near future, with two new installments potentially on the horizon, and now, director Ridley Scott has asserted that Prometheus 2 will begin shooting early in the new year.

A follow-up to the 2012 Alien pseudo-prequel, Prometheus 2 was not a forgone conclusion in fans’ minds, as io9 points out. A film that was received with lukewarm praise, Prometheus was a middle-of-the-road success in terms of financial return and critical appeal, leaving a potential sequel as a possibility, but by no means a certainty. Now, however, it appears that Prometheus 2 is definitely moving forward, despite missing its earliest planned release date of March, 2016.

In a new interview with Total Film, Scott asserted that Prometheus 2 will begin shooting in January of 2016. The revelation came alongside a pronouncement by the director that he wishes to return to the sci-fi realm in his work, something he has briefly touched on with his upcoming film The Martian.

“I’ve got back into the sci-fi thing, I kind of adore it,” Scott said.

Of course, Scott is notoriously wont to shift focus if a film doesn’t come together efficiently, and he is attached to more projects than most directors. In addition, Prometheus 2 is hardly the only film in the Alien franchise currently in the planning stages, as the Inquisitr has previously reported. Earlier this year, it was announced that South African director Neill Blomkamp would helm the fifth movie in the Alien series, after concept art for his proposed film was released online. The drawings inspired a widely positive reaction from fans, who have waited years to see another installment hit the screen.

Despite the fact that two films in the Alien franchise are heading into production, steps are being taken to make sure that they coincide with one another. Earlier this year, Blomkamp revealed that Scott would produce Alien 5, in addition to directing Prometheus 2, as Coming Soon reports.

“I changed the one thing [Scott] felt was bumping Prometheus a little bit. One thing that makes me feel good about it is that Ridley is producing it. He likes the idea of what I want to make.”

Alien fans have much to be excited about in the series’ resurrection, particularly amid news that Blomkamp’s project will largely ignore the last several sequels. Whether or not Ridley Scott’s Prometheus 2 moves forward on schedule, however, remains to be seen.
