‘Rocket League’ Expanding To New Platforms, Xbox One Likely

Rocket League the stunt car meets soccer game – has turned into a surprise success for the PlayStation 4 and Steam with more than 5 million copies downloaded so far. Developer Psyonix is now looking to expand that success to other platforms with the Xbox One being the most likely target.

PlayStation Plus subscribers gave Rocket League a large boost in July as it was one of the free games being offered for PS4 owners. Additionally, it has sat at the top of the Steam sales charts while critic and user reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. Now that it’s proven to be a success, Psyonix is looking to expand its playerbase.

“We’re now in a position that we can expand our team. We are absolutely, 100 per cent going to other platforms,” Psyonix’s VP of marketing and communications Jeremy Dunham told Gamezone. “What those platforms are and when we’ll come to them, I don’t know yet.

“Nothing is off the table. If the game can work on the platform and we can responsibly get that game working on a platform, we will never say never to any of the platforms that are current-gen. Anything is possible.”

The only current-gen platforms left out of the mix right now are the Xbox One and Wii U. The former is the more likely of the two since it has the larger install base and is growing while sales of the latter have stalled and the Nintendo NX is a year to two years away. Additionally, Psyonix recognized that Xbox One owners have been clamoring for a chance to try out Rocket League‘s unique formula.

Rocket League’s release to only two platforms had more to do with the indie developer’s size than any exclusivity arrangement or money though.

“The number one reason we’re only on PlayStation and PC is because the team is small,” he added. “For the majority of the development, there were only eight to 12 people working on Rocket League, and we’ve only very recently – in the last few weeks – added a couple of people to that count.

“The reason that we had to focus is because with that many people, and we’re perfectionists on top of that, we wanted to make sure the game ran well and that it had as many positive elements as possible, and that we weren’t just trying to port it to as many platforms as we possibly could just to try to maximize our profit.”
