Boy Dies: Cinnamon Ingested By 4-Year-Old Gets In His Lungs, He Dies 90 Minutes Later

A boy dies after inhaling cinnamon in his home in Kentucky. According to the Canada Journal, four-year-old Matthew Rader was in the kitchen when he climbed on to a counter and grabbed a container of cinnamon. He put the aromatic spice up to his face and inhaled some of the fine powder. His mom, Brianna, said that she saw her son collapse to the floor, and just start choking.

“He was completely healthy – no problems. He started choking. It was like he was having a seizure and just collapsed,” she said. Although she rushed him to a local hospital right away, it was too late. Young Matthew died about an hour and a half later.

The boy who died after ingesting cinnamon is helping bring awareness to the dangers of the household product. Brianna is using Matthew’s death as a way to warn other people that cinnamon, if ingested, can be deadly. She posted the following message on Facebook last month.

“I can’t express how grateful I am for all the amazing support we have right now. And each and every one of you are amazing… Matty man’s story made the Lex 18 news and now CNN wants to share it nationwide. That helps ease my breaking heart just a little to think that just maybe my baby’s story can save even just one child’s life. Cinnamon can kill. All these kids, they don’t think about the fact it can hurt them. My Matty was definitely loved by many and he loved everyone. Fly high baby boy we love you more than words could ever explain. And we miss you so much it hurts. R.I.P my sweet little angel.”

The boy died from cinnamon asphyxiation on June 3. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Matthew’s death was ruled an accident.

According to Mail Online, Brianna Rader wants people to know that cinnamon can be deadly. There have been teens (and some adults) who participated in the “Cinnamon Challenge” which is very dangerous, and doctors warn that particles of cinnamon in the lungs can cause someone to die — which is what happened to Matthew.

“The Cinnamon Challenge involves swallowing a spoonful of ground cinnamon without drinking any liquids, a prank that went viral on social networking sites in 2011. Doctors said the prank is dangerous as it could result in particles of the spice being inhaled through the windpipe and into the lungs, which could cause inflammation – and even choking.”
