‘Splatoon’ Gets Third Splatfest, Plus More Free DLC

Nintendo has officially announced the dates and times for the third Splatfest in Splatoon. From Friday, August 7, 2015 at 9:00 p.m. PT until Saturday, August 8, at 9:00 p.m. PT inkling girls and boys are invited to compete in a sharp-shooting, ink-splattering showdown. Players can choose to join either Team Marshmallows or Team Hot Dogs in a battle to determine which is best roasted over a campfire.

To join the messy fun, visit the Splatfest booth in the game and choose a team. Once made, this choice cannot be undone so players are advised to coordinate with friends and fellow players ahead of time if they want to compete for the same team. In the Americas, Team Dog won the first Splatfest despite an impressive showing by Team Cat. In the second Splatfest, Team Roller Coaster ousted Team Waterslide. Both match ups demonstrated that winning matches is important, but so are overall team numbers.

Once on a team, players get a T-Shirt item that is worn during the Splatfest event. According to the official Splatoon site, the shirt can be upgraded with Gear Abilities before the battle begins. Even though the shirt must be returned after Splatfest is over, adding the abilities is advised to give players an edge during the competition. Individual rankings in Splatfest determine how many Super Sea Snails each player receives to spend on gear enhancements.

The third Splatfest takes place just two days after Nintendo drops some brand new DLC that all Splatoon players can download for free on August 5, 2015. The software updates the Splatoon level cap to Level 50 (raised from previous cap of Level 20). The addition of two new weapon types are likely to change up the dynamics of ink combat this time around. The new weapon types are called Sloshers and Splatlings. Nintendo has provided additional details about these new weapons in a statement to the press.

“The bucket-like Slosher weapons hurl ink straight ahead at an impressive range. By adjusting the angle, these new weapons can be used to splat opponents who are up high or even on the other side of a wall. With the Gatling-style Splatling, players can charge blasts of all-powerful ink. A maximum charge unleashes the full potential of this particular weapon type.”

Nintendo also put to rest any concerns Splatoon fans may have had regarding free content coming to an end for the title.

“Despite its size and scope, this massive August update is not the end of the splat-acular free content coming to Splatoon. Following this update, more content will continually roll out through the rest of the summer and fall, including the Rainmaker Ranked Battle mode, additional maps and new weapons. More details about these additions will be revealed in the future.”
