Frank Ocean’s New Album: Fans Still Waiting For ‘Boys Don’t Cry’

Frank Ocean’s new album didn’t happen in July after all, although fans have been eagerly anticipating Ocean’s next drop since an apparent April announcement. Over three years ago, Frank Ocean released Channel Orange, his “phenomenal” debut, and the world has waited ever since for any sign of Ocean’s new album. In the years since Channel Orange, the Grammy winner has talked about the possibility of some new music, but in a 2012 interview with the Guardian, Ocean suggested that he might switch to novel writing.

“I might not make another album. I might just write a novel next. I don’t know!”

Hope hit the internet in April 2015 when Frank posted to Tumblr what looked like an announcement of not just a new album, but two versions of a new album. He posted a photo of himself with a pile of magazines titled, “Boys Don’t Cry,” and captioned the photo, “I got two versions. I got twooo versions…”

Shortly after the Tumblr post, one of Ocean’s reps confirmed that a new album and a publication were coming in July.

But July is over, and there’s no sign of new music or a magazine from the R&B singer. Fans are disappointed, and some are taking to Twitter to express their dissatisfaction with Ocean. One Twitter used was so unhappy, he reminded Frank that boys do cry.

Another fan posted that he was on the verge of tears.

Ocean’s new album was supposed to feature some great collaborations, including Hit-Boy, Rodney Jenkins, pianist Christophe Chassol, and Rick Rubin. The Franchise Herald reported that a Letterboxd article promised a new Frank Ocean song in the “summer blockbuster” Southpaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

“…at least there is a new Frank Ocean song at the end.”

Some fans are ready to give up on Frank Ocean’s new album, and might even give up on Ocean himself.

With Ocean’s first album described as “pure bliss” and his sound as “emotion-filled, unprecedented and sophisticated,” it’s no wonder fans are so upset about the missing album. Three years is a long time to wait for new music from a “rising star.”

Speculation is that the Boys Don’t Cry release (or whatever he decides to call the album) will happen “spontaneously” when fans have stopped expecting it.
