Charlize Theron Adopts Second Child, Baby Girl, Despite Sean Penn Split

Charlize Theron hasn’t let her breakup with Sean Penn stop her from becoming a mom again. Theron just adopted a new baby, this time a baby girl and has named her August, Us Weekly reports. The child is African American. Charlize adopted her first son from South Africa in 2012. His name is Jackson.

The South African stunner has been very candid in the past about becoming a mom in her late 30s.

“It’s given me perspective,” she said in an interview with W Magazine recently. “I do know that choosing to be a mom in my late 30s has been really great for me.”

It may seem odd for Theron to be adopting a child so soon after her breakup with Sean Penn, especially since the two Academy Award winners were engaged to be married. But it seems that the 39-year-old actress is content to be a single mother, at least for now. People Magazine reports that Charlize gained custody of the baby girl in July after a six-month process.

Just over a month ago, Us Weekly reported that Penn and Theron were calling it quits on their relationship and that their engagement was canceled. Though they were longtime friends, their romantic relationship became public knowledge in December 2013. It appears that they split soon after the Cannes Film Festival in the south of France in May this year.

“Charlize wasn’t responding to his calls and texts,” an insider source told Us Weekly. “She just cut it off.”

According to Us Weekly, both Theron and Penn planned to adopt a child together to give her adopted South African son a sibling.

“Sean always knew that to truly earn a place in Charlize’s heart, connecting with Jackson was one of the most important parts,” a friend of Penn told Us Weekly when the two stars were making adoption plans. “There is still talk of adopting again and giving Jackson a brother or a sister.”

According to the Daily Mail, in May Theron hinted at the fact that she wanted more kids but gave no concrete indication that she planned to adopt a child again.

When she was asked about adding to her brood, she said, “Yeah. I mean, I’m so open to anything in my life. I was never like, ‘Oh god no just one.’ I was always kind of open to whatever kind of happens.”

Theron is part of a growing group of actresses in their late 30s and 40s in Hollywood who have chosen to adopt.
