Maisie Williams’ ‘Doctor Who’ Role Will Be A Completely New Character, Says Steven Moffat

Maisie Williams’ Doctor Who role is expected to be something fans of the series have never seen before. That’s what series writer Steven Moffat has come forward to announce, along with an update about the possibility of a Doctor Who movie.

Speculation has been flying ever since the Game of Thrones actress was revealed to be in the latest season of the longest running British TV franchise of all time. Some have claimed she was simply a recast, much like the titular Doctor himself, while others have stated that she will only show up for a short period to promote her star power before leaving the series.

Moffat has dismissed both rumors. It was during a satellite conference, joined by main stars Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman, that Steven addressed the rumors surrounding Maisie WilliamsDoctor Who role.

“I can’t really tell you. I think once you see what she’s up to in the show you’ll appreciate what a clever idea of Brian Minchin’s – that was [my co-exec] who thought of Maisie for this part. It’s a significant role. We’re not throwing her away. We’re not just getting star value and doing nothing with it. It’s a great part, and she’s terrific in it. But, I would say, it will develop in unexpected ways.”

Steven Moffat also addressed how intelligent the show’s audience tends to be, and that they won’t be fooled by something like a recast role from the past.

“If people are hugely associated with a much-loved show, then it’s good to have them on your show. The audience is clever. They know you’re playing somebody else. They don’t get confused.”

The show’s writer was also rather cryptic when discussing Maisie Williams’ Doctor Who role.

“One thing I think is worth saying because it keeps coming up as an issue. She is not playing a returning character. She’s a brand new character. She is not someone from the Doctor’s past… Unless I’m lying. Aye.”

Apparently Moffat doesn’t want to give too much away before the show’s next season premieres. He has also addressed the idea that a Doctor Who movie may be on its way.

“The thing about the film, it’s not actually up to me. That’s up to the BBC. To say the least I don’t own Doctor Who.”

Steven Moffat also pointed out that if there is a movie, it might be like Futurama and take place of an entire season, according to the Los Angeles Times.
