Justin Bieber Congratulates 1D’s Niall Horan On No.1, ‘Music Isn’t About Competition’

Justin Bieber has congratulated One Direction’s Niall Horan on the No.1 worldwide chart success of the boy band’s new surprise single “Drag Me Down,” which was released early Friday.

Bieber took to Twitter on late Friday evening (August 31) and posted a friendly message to the Irish singer-guitarist, which read, @NiallOfficial congrats on the new single bro.”

As reported, Bieber and Horan have been pals since 2012. The pair recently hung out with the Australian singer Cody Simpson in Los Angeles, who subsequently posted a Snapchat video of himself, Justin, Niall, and another having a guitar jam session.

The Canadian superstar’s congratulations to Horan comes after One Direction’s “Drag Me Down” single rocketed to No. 1 on iTunes in 82 countries shortly after it was released. The single set a new iTunes record after hitting the No.1 spot in multiple territories — including the U.S. — within minutes. It has since become the fastest-selling single ever.

The song is the boy band’s first release following ex-member Zayn Malik’s shocking exit back in March.

Earlier this week, Bieber told Ryan Seacrest that his lead single “What Do You Mean?” will drop on August 28. A formal countdown to the single’s release is now in effect, and it looks as if Team Bieber are using a celebrity to promote the song each day.

However, despite this hype — or perhaps because of Bieber’s recently admitted to anxiety and sometimes depression while he preps his new album — the singer shared some sage reflections about music and expectations on Twitter immediately after shouting out Niall.

Bieber tweeted, “When it comes to music we shouldn’t be put up against each other.” He continued, “Music isn’t about competition it is about collaboration. It’s a language (sic)”

The heartthrob went on to write, “So fans shouldn’t have to choose. Music is about sharing and lifting each other up. I love music for what it can do for us. Much love (sic)”

Bieber enthused, “And thanks for all the great musicians who inspire me everyday. Thank you. I love music (sic)” He then joked, “Now go vote in every competition!!! Lol,” and added the August 28 release date.

Meanwhile, Mariah Carey is the latest celebrity to promote “What Do You Mean?” Bieber posted an Instagram pic of the songstress to Instagram and on Twitter, captioned, “Even @mariahcarey is excited. #whatdoyoumean.”

Carey’s help follows Bieber reportedly “crashing” Mariah and French Montana’s Hollywood studio session on Thursday. TMZ claims Justin “confessed” to Mimi that he’s a “huge fan,” which prompted her to play the jam they were working on. It’s reported the Biebs loved the song and laid down vocals, which will now feature on the record.

The world got a glimpse of that session after Montana and Carey posted Instagram snaps with Bieber and the producer, Detail. The Biebs’ pals Kylie Jenner and Pia Mia were also a the studio.

Update: A few hours after we went to press, Horan replied publicly — and very sweetly — to Bieber’s tweet, writing, “Thank you dude! Xxx.”
