Lucy Lawless, Renee O’Connor Reunite For Instagram Selfie After Squashing ‘Xena’ Reboot Rumors

On July 20, Lucy Lawless disappointed die-hard fans around the world when she said that the rumored Xena: Warrior Princess reboot was just wishful thinking. She may have inadvertently reignited those rumors, however, when she posted a selfie on Instagram and Twitter of herself with fellow Xena actress Renee O’Connor.

The caption on Lawless’ photo read “Still hanging with my gal #Reneeoconnor”

On the same day Lawless squashed the Xena reboot rumors, the Hollywood Reporter broke the story that NBC Universal was beginning to plan a reboot of the popular series — that originally starred Lucy Lawless as the titular hero, and Renee O’Connor as her sidekick and life partner (if not life partner) Gabrielle — for sometime in 2016, with original executive producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert already involved in the project.

At San Diego Comic Con, Lawless was asked by Den of Geek whether she would be interested in being a part of a Xena reboot. Thankfully, for fans around the world, she said that if a reboot were to eventually happen, she’d be happy to be involved.

“It would still be cool to do it again with Renee [O’Connor], me, Ted [Raimi], and Bruce [Campbell]. It’d be a fun little gig.”

When the fact that her character died in the series finale of the original show, Lawless simply answered “So what? Technicality! No one really dies!”

“Screw her head back on, it’s a bit wonky, and she’s got a really bad attitude since she’s been in a box for 20 years, so they’ve got to get Xena’s mojo back, and go and save the world somehow.”

Lucy was technically right about the death of her character being a mere technicality, especially considering both Lawless’ Xena and Renee O’Connor’s Gabrielle each died multiple times throughout the show’s six season run. In fact, both Lucy and Renee’s characters die a total of five times each throughout the 134 episodes.

While we may never see a Xena reboot, on October 31, Lucy Lawless can be seen in the new Evil Dead spinoff series, Ash Vs. The Evil Dead, reuniting with Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi, and Rob Tapert — who were all also a part of the original Evil Dead. Maybe if we’re lucky enough, perhaps there will be a guest starring role for Renee O’Connor as well.

Only time will tell, until then, Xena fans will just have to enjoy the Lucy Lawless, Renee O’Connor selfie, and keep hope alive that one day, Xena and Gabrielle will ride again.
