Russia Will Use Preemptive Force If US Builds Missile Shield

Moscow, Russia – Russia’s top military and political leaders have said that if the United States and NATO go ahead with placing a missile defense system in Eastern Europe they will retaliate with preemptive military force. Russia and the United States have not used language like that since the Cold War.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said that if a deal is not struck with the United States and the US goes ahead with the missile shield that Russia will use military force on Eastern Europe.

Chief of General Staff Nikolai Makarov went even further Thursday saying,

“A decision to use destructive force pre-emptively will be taken if the situation worsens,”

The United states claims that the missile defense shield is only meant to prevent rouge nations like Iran from firing long range missiles at the United States or Europe. Russia believes that the shield is there to undermine a Russian nuclear deterrent and rob Russia of a military edge.

Russian officials addressing a NATO gathering in Europe said that there still remains a high level of mistrust since the Cold War and that is not going to change anytime soon.

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said,

“We can’t just reject the distrust that has been around for decades and become totally different people. Why are they calling on me, on my Russian colleagues, to reject distrust? Better look at yourselves in the mirror.”

Russia has also threatened to upgrade their nuclear missiles and delivery systems in response to the missile shield. In America most believe that President Barack Obama is flexible on the shield, especially since he was caught telling Medvedev he will have more flexibility after this election which is his last.
