Steve Jobs Plays FDR In Long-Lost Macintosh Commercial

Steve Jobs may be best remembered for creating devices like the iPhone, iPad, and iPod, but apparently, the founder of Apple was also an actor. A long-lost Macintosh commercial featuring Steve Jobs as Franklin Delano Roosevelt has just resurfaced.

The Huffington Post reports that Apple ran a commercial during the 1984 Super Bowl.

The ad, which was directed by sci-fi legend Ridley Scott, was such a success that Apple produced a $50,000 9-minute sequel. The nine minute ad spoofs George Orwell’s “1984” and features Steve Jobs as FDR.

Jobs says:

“General, you and your brave fighting force have a rendezvous with destiny. Your battle will be long. It will be hard, but it will be won. I’m sure your victory will be great. Insanely great.”

Paul McNamara from Network World obtained the long-lost ad and yesterday a copy of the commercial was posted on Youtube. McNamara said that the 9-minute ad was originally shown to “rally the sales team” and hasn’t seen by many people outside of the Apple family.

The IB Times reports that several of the roles are filled by professional actors but Jobs, and other Apple employees like Apple vice president of marketing Mike Murray, appear in the film.
