North Carolina Anti-Gay Bill Meant To Protect the “Caucasian Race”

The wife of North Carolina state senator Peter Brunsetter had a lot to say about Amendment 1, North Carolina’s referendum on Gay Marriage. Jodie Brunsetter told poll workers that the amendment, which is sponsored by her husband, was intended to protect the Caucasian race.

Amendment 1 would change North Carolina’s Constitution so that only heterosexual marriage would be allowed in the State.

According to the alternative Yes! Weekly, writer and campaigner Chad Nance quoted a poll worker who said that Jodie Brunsetter said,

“The reason my husband wrote Amendment 1 was because the Caucasian race is diminishing and we need to uh, reproduce.”

Nance was recently a campaign manager for a Democratic candidate for congress and a volunteer for an organization devoted to defeating Amendment 1.

According to Yes! Weekly Nance resigned from the campaign trail specifically so he could speak about Jodie Brunstetter’s alleged remarks.

Nance spoke to Jodie Brunstetter about the issue. She claims that she used the word “Caucasian” when talking about the amedment to poll workers but that her remarks were taken out of context.

Brunsetter told Nance,

“We are looking at the history of the United States and it is already law about what marriage is it is between a man and a woman. I’m afraid they have made it a racial issue when it is not,”

Pressed on whether she had used the word “Caucasian,” she said,

“I probably said the word,” but she claimed she hadn’t used it in a racial manner.

Brunsetter’s husband could not be reached for comment.
