‘Fallout 4’ Director Says Settlement Construction Feels Like ‘Minecraft’

One of the features coming to Fallout 4 that Bethesda discussed as they surprised gamers this past June by announcing that the next entry of the apocalyptic franchise will be coming to current-gen platforms later this year is that players will be able to build their own settlements within the game. During the press event, the developer released footage of the game showing how users will be able to place objects within the world to build their own towns.

In an interview with The Guardian, Fallout 4 game director Todd Howard shared his thoughts on why settlement building will be an important aspect of the game. According to Howard, the decision to allow players to design their own towns is to give gamers the sense of actively rebuilding after some form of civilization as they once knew it.

“It goes back to that sense of loss. My home got blown up so I’m going to rebuild it; I’m going to make it new again. That goes to the whole theme of the game. And it’s fun.”

Trying to give fans an idea of just how much control that they will have in creating their settlement, Bethesda’s Pete Hines added that users will have control over every aspect of building in Fallout 4. Rather that adding an entire structure to their town, fans will be responsible for manually building each house’s frame.

“In Fallout 4, you don’t go into some menu and say, ‘I want a house like this’, and then the game builds it. No, you’re putting down the floor and ceiling and deciding where the lights go and stringing in the copper wire.”

The team behind Fallout 4 has a lot of confidence in the creation tools that will be at the player’s disposal in the game. The developer went as far as to say that the settlement portion of the game will give gamers the same kind of freedom in creation as one of the most beloved building title’s there is.

“It’s somewhat akin to games like Minecraft – if you give people the tools to express their creativity, they will …make stuff you never contemplated in a million years. You can’t change the entire world in Fallout 4, but there are a lot of spaces that you can make your own, if you want to. That’s super important.”

Designing their own townships won’t be the only way that the Fallout 4 community will be able to impact the game. The next entry of the popular series will once support player-created mods. In fact, for the first time, Bethesda plans on making the mods also available on console versions of the game. As the Inquisitr reported earlier today, however, fans will have to wait before getting to try out community modifications because official mod tools won’t be released until next year.

From now until launch, Bethesda has said that they will spend most of the remaining development time to remove bugs from Fallout 4. Do you plan on picking up the game this November?
