Teen Dies After 911 Dispatcher Hangs Up On Caller Trying To Perform CPR, ‘Deal With It Yourself’ [Audio]

A teen died after he was shot in a drive-by shooting in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The 17-year-old teen, Jaydon Chavez-Silver, was shot at a house party when an unidentified shooter opened fire from a vehicle outside the home. Jaydon’s friend, an unnamed female, called 911 and attempted to perform CPR on the dying teen. However, instead of receiving the help she needed, the woman was told to “deal with it yourself” by the aggravated dispatcher after she used a curse word during the call. The woman can be heard saying, “no, my friend is dying,” before the dispatcher hangs up on the frantic caller. The teen later died from his injuries, and an investigation has been opened into the dispatcher’s actions.

According to Time, 911 dispatcher and veteran firefighter Matthew Sanchez is in hot water after audio reveals the last words he spoke to a female caller attempting to care for a dying teen in New Mexico. Audio recordings of a 911 call made to the Albuquerque dispatcher show that Sanchez hung up on a woman attempting to provide CPR to a dying teen after a drive-by shooting. The audio reveals that after the frantic woman used a curse word, the dispatcher informed her that he wasn’t going to “deal with this” and hung up the phone.

The exchange between the caller and the dispatcher shows the high stress situation that the woman was in as she attempted to provide life-saving CPR for the dying teen. In the call, the woman informs the dispatcher that she is performing CPR and that she is “keeping him alive.” The dispatcher then asks if the victim is breathing and the caller responds “barely.” Despite telling the dispatcher that she is performing CPR and that he is barely breathing, the dispatcher asks yet again, “Is he breathing?” The frustrated caller responds, “He’s barely breathing. How many times do I have to f***ing tell you?”

Instead of taking the response with a grain of salt and understanding that the woman was witnessing her friend die before her eyes, the aggravated 911 dispatcher informs the caller she can “deal with it” herself and hangs up.

“Ok, you know what ma’am, you could deal with it yourself. I’m not gonna deal with this, okay?”

Fortunately, emergency responders were already on the way when the dispatcher hung up on the woman, but Jaydon Chavez-Silver would end up dying from his wounds. The teen’s family is upset by what happened during the 911 call, but says their focus right now is finding Jaydon’s killer.

What do you think of the way the 911 dispatcher handled the situation? Should dispatchers be better trained to deal with high-stress callers such as the case of Jaydon Chaves-Silver?
