Microsoft Free Giveaway – Windows 10: As Good A Promise As It Seems?

Microsoft has begun its free giveaway. As users receive notifications to download Windows 10, many are pondering whether to hit the upgrade button or skip and wait till Microsoft kills Windows 7 just like it ended the reign of Windows XP last year.

It is apparent Microsoft intends to urge or even propel users to use its Windows 10 Operating System (OS) and significantly reduce the fragmentation. However, through the giveaway, the company may also be hoping to ensure its dominance in the computing world continues for the foreseeable future.

It’s no secret that the digital world is witnessing increasing usage of smartphones, tablets and other handheld devices. Moreover, people are increasingly shifting their data onto virtual storage, commonly referred to as the ‘cloud’. If that’s not all, Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS has unleashed a whole new world of super-efficient apps.

It has to be noted, though Windows 8 had all the aforementioned advantages, the keyboard-mouse users felt left out with the lack of the ‘Start’ button. Windows 8 was clearly intended for mobile devices that had touchscreens as the default input method. No wonder, Windows 7 users gave Windows 8 a miss. However, since Microsoft had killed support for Windows XP, users had to migrate to the next available option, which was Windows 8 at the time.

Windows 10 seems to be an earnest effort by Microsoft to remedy what was erred in the previous release. The company has brought back the ‘Start’ button and with it, Windows 10 appears to appeal to those who strongly rely on the OS for their workstations, typing furiously on keyboards and using a mouse to navigate through multiple open pages.

No wonder, the free giveaway is aimed at PCs and tablets first, reported Yahoo. However, the company has stressed from early on that Windows 10 will be a unifying OS that will run, in varying capacities, on game consoles, smartphones and even virtual reality headsets in the very near future. With a spanking new browser called ‘Edge’ and a voice activated virtual assistant ‘Cortana’; Microsoft has tried to make Windows 10 a, as comprehensive a OS as possible.

Despite the strong attempts to offer a free copy of Windows 10 as a giveaway to registered users of Windows 7 and 8, Microsoft may encounter some trouble with dedicated users of the former and the number is quite high to be ignored.

There’s no doubt; Microsoft Windows 10 is made keeping in mind the PC using crowd and hence the free giveaway is hoped will boost the sagging sale of desktop computers. Undoubtedly there’s a lot riding on the widespread adoption of Windows 10 and giving it away for free might ensure the upgrade happens with least resistance.
