Bizarre TV commercial uses race to sell furniture

redhouse

Couches perfect for black people…and white people. Beds perfect for white people….and black people. That’s just two lines from a commercial for Red House Furniture that uses race relations as a selling tool.

The ad has caused many to cry racism, despite the message being one of racial equality. The makers of the ad followed up to the criticism, saying that the ad is “racial” and not racist, and that the absurdity of applying racial labels to furniture was making a broader point about racial labeling in general.

The Red House Furniture ad below. Following that, the video from one of the ad’s creators explaining the thinking behind the ad. Have they gone to far, or is this ad actually very clever?

That was the silliest shyt I have ever seen EVER! If they wanted to blur the racial lines it could have been done a little less bluntly than that. They are trying to promote a business. That reminded me of something from MAD TV. Tacky not racist.

  10. that's some funny shit. totally flies in the face of racism and stereotyping. nice.

  11. I'll concede with the creators' explanation… that this commercial does not really qualify as being racist, since it does not promote hatred or inequality between different races. However, at best, this commercial is anachronistic, and at worst, tasteless. The racial references in this commercial are *entirely* gratuitous, the resulting video is one that, in my opinion, shows very little taste, considering the modern north american social climate. This commercial might have made a lot more sense to air in the early half of the 20th century, if television itself had been popular at the time. All this video really highlights is that some people think we actually haven't moved beyond that point, and while I don't doubt that there are some individuals who have not, our society itself has. I'm not saying you can't mention race without being considered controversial, but when race should have nothing to do with a particular subject, mentioning it unnecessarily is the very definition of gratuitous, and whether or not that is the intent, it will inevitably come across as trying to somehow promote a hidden agenda that is actually related to the issue of race, and is why a person's knee-jerk reaction is to consider it racist (even though technically speaking, it is not).

The above thought is smart and doesn’t require any further addition.
It’s perfect thought from my side.
