Angelo Mondragon: Man Saves 3-Year-Old Girl From Drowning In Deep Waters

Angelo Mondragon just happened to be in the right place at the right time, and the riveting twist of fate ultimately saved the life of a 3-year-old girl. According to the Coloradoan, the 32-year-old plumber was spending the weekend with family at Windsor Lake on the afternoon of Sunday, July 26. However, the relaxing weekend quickly took an unexpected turn when he made a shocking discovery in the water.

During a recent interview with the publication, he recounted the odd touch he felt while walking through waist-deep water. “It felt like something you normally wouldn’t feel in the water,” Mondragon told the Coloradoan. “I did sort of a back kick to bring up whatever it was, and then I saw the bottom of a baby’s foot float up.”

His action led to the discovery of 3-year-old Sitali Hernandez. He immediately pulled her limp body from the deep waters and yelled for help. “I saw her toes and at that moment she became my baby,” he said. “And I didn’t think twice. I just dove in and my parent instincts took over. I grabbed her out of the water and screamed ‘Whose baby is this?'”

But after pulling Hernandez from the water, Mondragon noticed something else — she was totally unresponsive. “I grabbed her and carried her limp body to the shore,” Mondragon said. “The girl was already blue. She wasn’t breathing.”

According to Opposing Views, Mondragon worked vigorously with two off-duty nurses to revive the child by administering CPR. When paramedics arrived, Hernandez was rushed to the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, but was later transferred to Children’s Hospital in Aurora, CO. That’s where Mondragon went to visit Hernandez on Monday, July 27. There, he was greeted by her family. According to 9News, Mondragon revealed how Hernandez touched her heart and why he decided to visit her in the hospital.

“I came here because like I told you,” he said. “When I saw that little girl’s toes, that became my baby. She was my family and I did everything that I could, that I would do for my family. I just want her to know that we’re here for her and we’re going to see her all the way through her healing process and we’re going to watch her grow up,” he said.

Although the world views Mondragon as a hero because of his life-saving act, he simply credits the incredible feat to being in the “right spot at the right time.” “If I was not in that right spot at the right time, it could have been a search and rescue mission,” Mondragon said. “As I told the little girl’s mom, when I saw the baby’s toes that became my baby.”

Representatives with Children’s Hospital in Aurora, CO, have confirmed that the child is in good condition and expected to make a full recovery.
