John Cena’s Nose A Smash On ‘Monday Night Raw’

Nothing seems to stop John Cena. He starred in a smash movie that opened a few weeks ago – Trainwreck, where he plays one of Amy Schumer’s many onscreen loves – and last night, on Monday Night Raw, Cena’s nose was smashed during his matchup with Seth Rollins. All it took was a very solid flying knee to an otherwise soft region of Cena’s face for Cena’s nose to become the smash of the night.

Very little holds Cena back, though. Cena powered through the matchup with Rollins, eventually coming out the victor. Of course, with Trainwreck having been recently released, puns about the condition of Cena’s nose were rampant through the internet. Most generally compared the break – which left Cena’s nose looking fairly mangled – to a trainwreck, but it was the heart Cena showed in simply finishing the match and winning that got people talking.

Cena’s real-life girlfriend, Nikki Bella, tweeted her support of her injured boyfriend.

To be sure, arguments about the fake nature of wrestling have heated up; no one expected Cena’s nose to take the heat during the matchup with Rollins and several people challenged others on social media to prove that pro wrestling was fake.

Cena is not the only pro wrestler to experience a broken nose. Cena finds himself in esteemed company for that particular sort of injury. Many argue that the fractured nose that Joey Mercury received is one of the worst breaks in WWE franchise history, as he was trying to use a ladder for a “double noggin knocker” maneuver, with disastrous results. Mercury busted his nose and the surrounding orbital bone and bled badly in the seconds after the injury was sustained. Cena’s nose looks bad, but Mercury’s injury for sure tops it.

Cena was taken to hospital for what WWE termed “extensive medical evaluation” because, as Dr. Steve Daquino, WWE physician, pointed out, Cena has “quite a bit of displacement” going on with his nose.

Cena was able to retain his U.S. title, thanks to his ability to hang in for the rest of the match and trounce Rollins. It’s anticipated at this point that the two WWE heavyweights will meet at Summer Slam with Rollins putting his heavyweight title on the line. After the injury that Cena sustained on Monday Night Raw, with an as-yet undisclosed recovery underway, it’s a lock that there will be more than a few fans watching to see how explosive this matchup will be between the two feuding WWE superstars.
