Taking a 5-Year Old To A Tanning Salon? NJ Mom Arrested [VIDEO]

Posted: May 2, 2012

Authorities have arrested a New Jersey mother for taking her 5 year old daughter to a tanning salon, causing serious burns and damage to her skin.

Police say that 44 year old Patricia Krentcil has been charged with child endangerment. Krentcil has already bailed out of jail for the amount of $25,000, however, the NJ mother was only released to authorities in Camden county where she was wanted for an outstanding warrant as well.

“The little girl went to school and reported she had these burns and that caused the school to contact authorities,”  says Katherine Carter, spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The 5 year old that went to the tanning salon was experiencing “pretty severe pain” says to Nutley Police Detective Anthony Montanari.

According to the extremely tan 44 year old New Jersey mother, when she took her 5 year old daughter to the tanning salon, she only stood in the room, but never actually entered the booth where the tanning process takes place.

“I never once in my life would let my daughter, especially at that age, go into a tanning booth” proclaims Krentcil to Good Morning America.

The tanning salon claims that they did not know that the 5-year old had found her way into the tanning booth. Also, the tanning salon’s location and name are not being released as the investigation is on going.

New Jersey law disallows anyone under the age of 14 years old to tan at a tanning salon.

How do you feel about this NJ mother taking her 5-year old to a tanning salon?

Irregardless of how this little girl got in the same place as the mom, it is wrong, wrong, wrong. Saw a video of mom, she looks horrendous. I hope they find her guilty.

  2. The mother is a great advertisement about the damage that tanning does to your skin. She is 2 years younger than I am and she looks about 20 years older than I do!

She should be punished along with the tanning place. Said they didn't know she was in there? That is crap. Yes the mother looks fried and what is that in her mouth.

  4. It looks like Grandma, ignorance.

  5. if you have to go take your kid to a sitter.

In my opinion, this is a typical "let's find her guilty without knowing the facts" attitude. We don't know that the little girl really did any tanning at the salon, and the mother is an adult. If she wants to tan the way she does, that is totally up to her. I wish people would stop jumping to conclusions.

  7. Omg is that blk eyeliner on her bottom lip?

All tanning salons should be banned – like all cigarettes should be banned – they cause cancer – are unhealthy and dangerous. She claims she did not allow her daughter to use it – but if you saw her on the news this morning she looked like a piece of burnt toast – clearly this woman is not playing with a full deck and has a serious tanning addiction.

  9. and idk this is irresponsible i know sometimes you don't always havery a sitter to go and do things….so as a parent you sacrifice your wants for your child . can't find a baby sitter stay your ass home ! stupid Bitch !

  10. there should be something done to her for a five year old in a tanning bed. I am older than this woman and she looks older than me.

I couldn't tell if it was her tongue sticking out or what was going on there… I think you are correct about the eyeliner though.

  13. Wow

  14. Wow! I think this mother is an idiot and New Jersey has laws, that clearly they are enforcing, to keep kids out of tanning booths, but banning things because they are bad for you? Where does your list end? How about peanut butter? That can kill people. What about cars? Cocktails? Baseball? No thanks on the bans – I will keep my freedom to choose and trust the law to punish those who take things too far.

  15. what a dumb bitch, seriously who in there right mind takes a 5 year old to a tanning bed, I hope they find her ass guilty.

  16. ok am I seeing right but either this women has no teeth or she is wearing a mouth guard lmfao.

  17. Not for nothing, but she is a yr younger then me & she looked like she was 70… (2nd) laws are made to punish the stupid for not having common sense

  18. Not only should she go to jail..THis is awlful……What about the tanning place, they had to have known after a period of time……

  19. This is the most pathetic thing ive seen in a while. If you have to take your 5yr old to the salon so you can continue to look like shit…which you do then maybe you should just do us all a favor and stay in there til you friggin burn to death! Can you imagine what that poor baby has to deal with. On top of her mother being COMPLETLY IRRESPONSABLE she prob gets teased all the time for her mother looking like a freak! Makes me sick

  20. I thought the same thing!!! Something is definitly not right with this woman!!!!

    May 2, 2012

This is a perfect example of why kids shouldn't be allowed in tanning salons PERIOD.

  31. I think the mother is an idiot…but what about the tanning salon owner for allowing that to happen! I owned a Beauty Salon when I lived in NY for 12 years….and in no way as a salon owner would I have let any child in the booth with momma….You had to be 18…You need to be aware of what you are doing and take everything you do into moderation. Obviously people over do it a lot…with many things…..

  32. Helen Bragdon-Tinkler I agree…totally….everything is bad for you! People need to do their homework and understand what they are doing!!!! and do what they choose in moderation…if you don't like it …don't do it!!! I like that freedom too.!

Inquisitor needs to put a link so I can share this on pages.

  37. Her mother may not have let her daughter in the tanning booth or not who knows. But 5 year olds generally idolize their parents and want to be like them. The girl may have seen her mother go to the salon a lot and when she took her with her she could have gotten into the booth on her own to be "just like mommy."

I looked at this earlier and her lips are lined with purple liner and then like a silverish lip stick. It looks horrible. And for her tanning, she needs to lay off the bronzer, lookin like snookie!

  54. Margie Kale Pearson
    May 2, 2012

Carol Carpenter I think it's permanent also. I just a pic of her on the View and it was there again. And she really looks terrible. Her lips were white.

It sounds like this mom is more interested in keeping up her leather face look at all cost! and the cost of purposely burning her child is the biggest of all.Stick the mom in a microwave: same difference.

As a mother, ALL GIRLS, I try to set a good example for my daughters. I would NEVER under any circumstances even take my girls to a salon that does nails, because of the fumes, much less a tanning salon. What the crackers was this woman thinking even letting her daughter walk through the door? The mother is most likely going to end up with skin cancer in the long run, and the permanent makeup she's got around her mouth makes her look worse. She's just not setting a good example for her daughter by doing these kinds of things. My opinion.

    May 2, 2012

Margie Kale Pearson : That's funny. Thanks for that.

  59. So are cigarettes, red meat, guns, drugs etc You can't ban everything that is dangerous. BUT ONLY AN IDIOT would take ANY CHILD, NO MATTER WHAT AGE into a tanning booth. She should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law

  60. There is a video of her where she is on the Today or one of those shows. She is 10x tanner in person and it looks disgusting. I own a tanning salon and I would do an intervention if any of my clients even got 1/4 of a way that tan. Many of these people are serial tanners and go to more than 1 salon a day. In my salon NO ONE UNDER 18 is allowed there…period

Why do you work there or something??? Your getting pretty defensive.

  69. Deborah A. Marjomaa Holohan
    May 2, 2012

Jaime Blackett : Not defensive at all. These responders sound like a bunch of High School bullies who can't wait to ridicule anyone. I never indicated that I agree with anything, I just don't know what happened. That is up to the courts if it gets to that. Everyone on this list wants to lynch her because of what they are reading in the media. I really hate to see this happen to anyone. (and it's you're, not your).

  70. Deborah A. Marjomaa Holohan Really??? You have posted crap all over people's comments….and i believe in one of them you wrote "in my opinion" haha you crack me up…..I never stated my opinion…I answered a question at the end of an article…..Regardless the child is severely sunburned….obviously a little neglect…I hope you're not a mother!

  74. Deborah A. Marjomaa Holohan
    May 2, 2012

Jaime Blackett : What opinion have I given? All I've written is that people shouldn't criticize without knowing all the fact. In this case, we don't. Also, to judge anyone base on her appearance is just cruel. (and you did it again. It's you're, not your.)

    May 3, 2012

Deborah A. Marjomaa Holohan Your your your your your, I will say your all I want and yes you did give your opinion, you wrote it in the very first sentence. I am done with you and your dumb ass comments.

  77. Gwendolyn Walker – Why do Black women slick their hair in weird shapes? Is it because in the Black community it is considered attractive? That is why many White people like to tan – in general it is considered attractive – although I would say this woman has gone way overboard. Personally I prefer a natural tan from being in the sun – I think I look healthier and it is a source of Vitamin D.

I am curious about your comment "It not an excepted color among the races…" (I think you meant to say accecpted) What in the world does that mean??? Are you suggesting that there are not as many variences within Caucasian skin tones? Do you know that Indians (from India) are Caucasian? Since when does the Black race have exclusive rights to various shades of flesh? And just so you know, before you say it, I am not being defensive – I am just floored that you would make such ludicrous statements about skin color and race.

  78. Deborah A. Marjomaa Holohan -100% agree with all of your comments!

  79. Gwendolyn Walker
    May 3, 2012

Helen Bragdon-Tinkler I ask a question because i am really curious as to why,and i know exactly what i meant….If your skin tone is of an olive or brown tone like the indians or latino's..then it is a natural thing..But if your skin tone is white and you know that tanning or worshiping the sun is not healthy, and being near that skin tone (ANOTHER RACE) JUST TURNS YOU OFF…WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO GET THAT COLOR……When I was a young girl in the early 60's I had a white teacher literally point her finger at me and told another white teacher in a causal conversation that when summer break came she was going to get a tan like my color…..It bothered me so much that I could not wait to go home and tell my mother..to which she replied…Don't worry…your color will last her's will fade…..And as for my hair never slicked it back and have no Idea what BLACK WOMEN YOU BEEN HANGING WITH! And if you haven't notice..WE DO OWN THE RIGHT'S TO VARIOUS SHADES..BECAUSE WE AS BLACK PEOPLE COME IN MANY SHADES OF BLACK….AND YOU?

  80. Gwendolyn Walker – Ok – you win for making some of the most incredibly ignorant racist comments ever. You own the rights to various skin tones??? WOW! If someone is white and they are tan they are automatically racist? I would take more time to respond but I am too busy shaking my head…

  81. Gwendolyn Walker
    May 3, 2012

Helen Bragdon-Tinkler Well you took this to this level not me…i ask a simple question and for some reason it brought out something you have been wanting to say for a while…Racist I am not but I can have a conversation without getting bent out of shape and calling people name's …You should be shaking your head…at how you can not have an adult conversation without turning it into something ugly….please don't take anymore time out to respond I KNOW IT IS BENEATH YOU AND I WOULD NOT WANT YOU TO GET THAT LOW……HAVE A BLESSED DAY..BECAUSE I WILL….PEACE.

  82. Gwendolyn Walker – WOW!!!! You certainly dont know me at all and it is not beaneath me to answer you. Racist is not a name, it is a way of thinking and behaving and your statements are racist, plain and simple. You have made broad, sweeping judgements about people based on the color of their skin and that, by definition, is racist. I know its tough when the shoe is on the other foot. I am not sure what you think I have been wanting to say for a while. I live with my husband (White) and my son (Black) so we have lots of conversations about race and racism and there is nothing I have said here that I have not expressed already dozens of times – in my own home and amongst my friends – of all races and skin tones. I have seen racism and dealt with it first hand, so I recognize it pretty quickly, as I am sure you do as well. It is sad to me that you don't recognize that your original comments are racist – talking about what colors are accepted and what colors are not, and that you continue to make racist statements – that you "own the rights to various shades" etc. Your original comment and the ones that followed were ugly. Your attitude is one of the many reasons that race continues to be an issue in this county. If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

  83. Gwendolyn Walker
    May 3, 2012

Helen Bragdon-Tinkler OK…IF YOU WANT TO THINK I AM RACIST HAVE IT YOUR WAY…YOU NEED TO GO BACK AND SEE MY ORIGINAL QUESTION I ASKED….THERE WAS NOTHING MALICIOUS OR HATFUL ABOUT IT I JUST ASKED A QUESTION AND STILL HAVE NOT GOTTEN AN ANSWER…BUT IF IT MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER TO CALL ME A RACIST…..OR THAT I MADE RACIST COMMENTS WHEN YOU YOURSELF HAVE SAID A FEW RACIST THINGS.THEN FEEL FREE……I JUST WANTED A QUESTION ASKED AND I GOT A HOLY WAR…..LIGHTEN UP LADY……….ENJOY YOUR VICTORY…AND WOULD SOMEONE ANSWER MY FIRST QUESTION PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  84. Gwendolyn Walker – I answered your question. Many people think that it is attractive to be tan. You might not like it,but clearly she does. Also, being in the sun is the best way to get Vitamin D (not that she gets Vitamin D from a tanning salon, but in general, if you tan in the sun you get Vitamin D) It also is a popular thing in New Jersey – where this lady is from. That is the answer to why people tan.
As for lightening up – I am not the one yelling.

  85. Gwendolyn Walker
    May 3, 2012

Helen Bragdon-Tinkler OMG..I KNOW THAT THEY SAY IF YOU TYPE IN CAPS IT'S LIKE YELLING…BUT REALLY CAN YOU TRULY HEAR MY VOICE…SOMETIMES I FORGET TO TAKE THE CAP'S OFF SO..OH WELL AS FOR THIS CONVERSATION THAT HAS GOTTEN REALLY SILLY..I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU BUT IT'S A RAP…..DONE…HAD ENOUGH OF THE DRAMA..WAS SUPPOSE TO BE AN CASUAL ADULT CONVERSATION AN HAS TURN INTO MEET THE PRESS……IT IS NOT THAT SERIOUS..AS I SAID BEFORE HAVE A BLESSED DAY…PEACE.

  86. OMG That woman has got to out of her mind! She looks horrible and she wants to do that to her daughter? She has got to be nuts!

I believe it's true, we as the public, do not know all the facts. We as a population are very quick to form our judgements and opinions before we know exactly what happened. I do know, I own a hair salon that offers a clean and regulated tanning facility for my customers in New Hampshire. Similar to New Jersey, we are regulated and expected to provide a safe tanning experience for the public. I do not believe for one minute that the tanning facility in question, or any tanning facility for that matter can honestly say, they didn't know whether the child entered the tanning room. Every tanning facility has an attended who is REQUIRED by law to attended a training on the state reg's.

Tanning itself is no more or less damaging than the natural sun. In terms of being in a controlled enviorment with only a limited amount of exposure and eye protection — it's safer than the sun.

The danger arises from people who do not follow directions, over expose themselves and plainly disregard safety.

We as a tanning facility cannot control human stupidity or their behavior. We can only ensure that our facility follows the rules and provides a good clean safe enviorment for the public.

All tanning facilities should take this very seriously and the public should not necessarily place all the blame on the parent. We as a service provider need to be strict and uphold our state reg's — that's why we have laws. Maybe it pisses off a customer who thinks it's stupid – and in my opinion – if they don't respect the reg's – then I don't want them as a customer!
