EA Discusses The Collaborative Efforts Behind Creating ‘Star Wars Battlefront’ Alongside Disney And Lucasfilm

After Electronic Arts received the video game rights to the Star Wars franchise following Disney’s acquisition of the popular sci-fi series, the first title to use the IP that the publishing giant announced would be the return of Star Wars Battlefront.

However, just because EA had the rights to the property doesn’t mean that they still don’t have to run everything by Disney in Lucasfilm. All three entities must work together to ensure that they agree on what will be included on this year’s Star Wars Battlefront.

Fortunately, speaking toGames Industry, Electronic Arts’ Patrick Söderlund revealed that they have had a great experience in working collaboratively with the franchise owners while creating Star Wars Battlefront. The vice president of EA Studios stated that the publisher has had an easy time at seeing eye to eye with the Star Wars license holders.

“Disney has been very supportive. Everyone said ‘big licenses are hard to work with, the licensors.’ There’s been a lot of guidelines and rules that you need to follow, but they’ve been very simple, and they’ve always felt right to follow them. We’ve never had a big, ‘what are you guys thinking, putting Jabba the Hutt here? That makes no sense”

According to Söderlund, the process of sending their ideas and work on Star Wars Battlefront to Disney and getting it approved wasn’t difficult at all. This was said to be due to the fact that everyone was very clear about what they expected to get out of the project from the beginning.

“I think Disney’s and Lucasfilm’s vision for Star Wars, where they wanted to take Star Wars, made us very comfortable with this, and we were genuinely excited when they explained to us what they were going to do with it.”

Söderlund also said working on Star Wars Battlefront was something that it seemed everyone has been excited about. It was clear that being involved with the Star Wars franchise was an honor to the development team over at DICE. The studio continues to want fans to know that they are focused on making Star Wars Battlefront stand apart from their signature Battlefield series. Pointing out many of these differences, IGN wrote an in-depth article which details how the upcoming Star Wars title will break away from DICE’s previous work.

Star Wars Battlefront is scheduled to launch this November on current-gen platforms. As a bonus to EA Access subscribers, Xbox One owners who are also members of the publisher’s premium service will get the opportunity to try out the game prior to its official release later this holiday season.
