Damond Powell: NFL Rookie Shot In The Face Outside Ohio Home During Drive-By Shooting

Damond Powell, 22, was shot outside of his Ohio home on Friday night.

According to the Washington Post, Arizona Cardinals rookie wide receiver Damond Powell was shot and wounded outside of his tome in Toledo on Friday, July 24.

Witnesses report seeing three men in masks driving by in a gold-colored car at around 8:30 p.m. The masked men then opened fire on Powell, who was hit in the face, while he was sitting in a car in his home’s driveway with his friends. Powell’s home and another vehicle were also struck by the bullets.

A staff member at the University of Toledo Medical Center said there was no information to release about Powell at this time, however the police previously reported that his injuries were not life-threatening. While the full extent of Damond’s injuries are not clear, it is being reported that he is expected to recover.

Powell signed with the Cardinals on May 5 as an undrafted free agent after spending two years with the University of Iowa. Not only was he a star football player, but he was also an excellent basketball player at Rogers High School in Toledo.

The Cardinals released a statement on Saturday following the shocking news, according to ESPN.

“We are aware that Damond Powell was the victim of a shooting last night in Toledo, where he remains hospitalized,” the team said in their statement. “We have been in communication with his family to offer whatever support and resources we can provide. We will continue to monitor and provide updates as appropriate.”

The Cardinals training camp starts on Friday, July 31, and as of now, it is unclear as to whether or not Powell will be able to join his team. Their first practice is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 1.

Several shell casings were taken from the home. However, no arrests have been made as of Monday, July 27. The police are still searching for the suspects and investigating the shooting. Anyone with any information about the crime should contact Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111.
