Amos Shook Death: Human Remains Found Inside Car Believed To Be Of A Man Missing For 43 Years

Investigators believe that human remains found inside a car pulled out of a North Carolina lake could be of Amos Shook, a man missing for the past 43 years. According to Fox News, Amos Shook went missing in February 1972 and was never heard from since. If the identity of the human remains is confirmed to be that of Shook, a retired U.S. Air Force veteran at the time he went missing, they would finally get a sense of closure – something that has evaded them for the past four decades.

Investigators pulled out a 1968 model Pontiac from Lake Rhodhiss on Tuesday morning. The car was detected under the lake after investigators used SONAR technology to scourge for objects underneath the water. SONAR was not available at the time of Shook’s disappearance. The car matches the car owned by Amos back in 1972. Apart from human remains, investigators also discovered a wallet inside the submerged car, again believed to be of Shook, ABC News reported.

According to Caldwell County sheriff’s investigators, Amos Shook was reported missing on February 19, 1972. They are also very confident that the car and the human remains belong to Shook. Sheriff Alan Jones told reporters that he believed it’s him. Officials are now awaiting the results of an autopsy as well as positive identification from the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. However, it would take at least three months to receive a complete autopsy report

Amos’ car was found 150 feet from the shore of Lake Rhodhiss, a lake located about 75 miles northwest of Charlotte, North Carolina. At this time, investigators do not believe there was any foul play involved in his death.

A reinvestigation into Amos Shook’s disappearance was launched earlier this year after a family member visiting North Carolina provided them with a tip that led them to Lake Rhodhiss. Shook’s daughter approached the sheriff and asked them to look for her missing father in the lake. Amos Shook was incidentally 43-years-old when he went missing. The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Department has in the meantime released a photo of the car that was pulled out from the lake. Sheriff Alan Jones said this was one of the “oldest cold cases we’ve worked.”

“It put some closure on something [the family’s] been looking forward to for a long time,” Jones added.

The Inquisitr had earlier this year reported about another similar incident when investigators found the body of a man missing for 23 years from a car submerged in a lake in Kansas.
