New York Elementary Students Sing Martina McBride’s “I’m Gonna Love You Through It” To Cancer Stricken Teacher [Video]

The chorus at a New York elementary school sang Martina McBride’s “I’m Gonna Love You Through It” to their teacher who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

The students at Public School 22 in Staten Island, New York, performed the emotional song to their teacher Adriana Lopez, 48, who just recently was told by doctors that she has breast cancer. The children’s chorus generally performs a special song for their director each year, but this year they decided to dedicate the song to Lopez.

A video of their performance was uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday, July 21, and has since gone viral, showing the group of kids singing from their hearts.

“This song was suggested by Ms. Lisa for our dedication to this strong and inspiring woman, and it’s hard to imagine a more perfect selection,” the video’s description reads.

Lopez can be seen sitting in the choir room, and starting to tear up as the students explained that they wanted to “give something back” because they were “so inspired” by her “fighting spirit.” She then continues to dab her eyes with a tissue as the children belt out Martina McBride’s emotional song.

At one point in the song, the director leads the group of students in the next verse, and as they join in, they each hold up a pink flower and sway it in the air as they sing.

At the conclusion of the video, Lopez said: “Thank you. It was wonderful. It’s not easy but I will get through it because I have wonderful friends at this school.”

Below is the lyrics to Martina McBride’s “I’m Going To Love You Through It” from MetroLyrics:

She dropped the phone and burst into tears
The doctor just confirmed her fears
Her husband held it in and held her tight
Cancer don’t discriminate or care if you’re just 38
With three kids who need you in their lives
He said, ‘I know that you’re afraid and I am, too
But you’ll never be alone, I promise you’

When you’re weak, I’ll be strong
When you let go, I’ll hold on
When you need to cry, I swear
That I’ll be there to dry your eyes
When you feel lost and scared to death,
Like you can’t take one more step
Just take my hand, together we can do it
I’m gonna love you through it.

She made it through the surgery fine
They said they caught it just in time
But they had to take more than they planned
Now it’s forced smiles and baggy shirts
To hide what the cancer took from her
But she just wants to feel like a woman again
She said, ‘I don’t think I can do this anymore’
He took her in his arms and said
‘That’s what my love is for’

When you’re weak, I’ll be strong
When you let go, I’ll hold on
When you need to cry, I swear
That I’ll be there to dry your eyes
When you feel lost and scared to death,
Like you can’t take one more step
Just take my hand, together we can do it
I’m gonna love you through it.

And when this road gets too long
I’ll be the rock you lean on
Just take my hand, together we can do it
I’m gonna love you through it.
I’m gonna love you through it.
